The Temper Trap have announced the departure of guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto. Lorenzo played guitar for the band from 2006 and has been both a recording and touring member. Lorenzo said, ...Its been an incredible experience. I want to thank the boys for all the amazing times, places we have seen and played and laughs along the way, management, record labels, the many people whove supported the band throughout the years, the many friends Ive made and of course the fans - it has been an amazing journey, an experience I will never forget and one that changed my life. The Temper Trap are working on their third studio album which is expected to be released early 2014.

Tom Clancy, one of the worlds prolific military, espionage and political thriller novelists of all time has passed away at the age of 66. The Baltimore Sun claims he died Tuesday after a brief illness at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Of the 26 books Clancy wrote, 17 became New York Times Bestsellers. His written works have transcended their way from pages films such as The Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears. In 1996 Clancy cofounded Red Storm Entertainment which developed gaming franchises Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon.

The fourth book of C.S. Lewiss children fantasy series will be going into production more than three years after the release of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The C.S. Lewis Company has made a deal with Hollywood producer Mark Gordon to produce the fourth film in the franchise, which appeared to have hit a roadblock following disappointing box office receipts for the third movie.

British comedian Jimmy Carr will be coming to New Zealand for the first time to perform his latest show Gagging Order. David Bowie is to release a new three-disc album The Next Day Extra, the collectors issue of his latest album, The Next Day, which was released earlier this year during March. The latest offering will feature a 10-track companion CD with five never before heard tracks, Atomica, The Informer, Like A Rocket Man, Born In A UFO and God Bless The Girl. The collection will have two new remixes, including one by LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy and a DVD, which will have visuals from Where Are We Now?, The Stars (Are Out Tonight), Valentines Day and The Next Day. Alongside all the extra content will be the original 14-track album. The Next Day Extra is set for release on Mon 04 Nov. Your house is on fire, what do save? 1. Boyfriend 2. Dog 3. Rickenbacker. Dream job as a kid? To be a fly girl on In Living Colour or a backing singer for someone like Michael Jackson or Bobbi Brown (as long as I got to wear a tight black dress and red lipstick and be on a stage I didnt mind, so kind of Im living the dream except I mostly wear loose-fitting long tops and trousers of some description). First album? Cassette: MJs Thriller. CD: Weezers blue album. Ultimate festival line-up? Prince, Michael Jackson, The Clash, Toots & the Maytals, Whitney Houston, MIA, Ricky Gervais, and myself and all my muso mates. Who would play you in a film? Anyone except Kiera Knightly or Kristen Stewart please. Worst job youve had? A luggage shop in Dressmart Onehunga for my first year of university. Would you like to see the features of this suitcase? Biggest fear? I only really have first world problems. My life is pretty great really. But I have a recurring dream where all my teeth fall out and the worst part is feeling them in my mouth then spitting them into my hands, or crunching them by accident. I bet that dream is not actually about teeth though... First gig in attendance? I think it was either Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Supertop or Big Day Out 1996. Any vices? Caring too much.

BODEGA
7PM, $20, UTR.CO.NZ

Stardom fickle but surely the point of pop music is to be liked, and purchased. Yet the theme of Lordes single Royals is a dig at success and fame and the cult of personality. Her defiantly low key video for Tennis Court, which opens this debut, strings right at you, like Kate Moss on the cover of The Face; blank, yet knowing, taunting black eyes burning through screen. Its hypnotic, confronting, slightly uncomfortable. Her moody cover of Swingin Party reinforces this. Its an off script exciting contradiction to the Taylor Swift banality out there now. Actually, it was recently reported she spoke too truthfully in an interview, accidentally insulting the very same woman. Still, she also turned down Katy Perrys invite to tour. We dont care/ We arent caught up in your love affair - i.e. Lorde has introduced herself to the world as someone who doesnt give many monkeys, in fact 20 secs into Pure Heroine, shes already announced shes bored. Thick droning synths, metronomic drum loops creating neutral downbeats inspired by hip-hop. Its an effect that will become Lordes trade-mark. Her voice may not be suited to over the top high end production, nor should it be, instead preferring to cruise around the lower vocal ranges, capitalising on her huskiness and making her songs conversational as they combined street talk with poetic imagery. Unlike real pop-princesses, Lorde will always have the free spirit about her. Theres a character in her ultra

If you had to choose between a charity event and a killer gig, which one would you pick? Hell, why not just have both? successful Royals that seems to think so proudly proclaiming that theyll never fall into the trappings of superstardom, as they are taught by E! and MTV. The theme returns in Team which considers the glossy houses and cities of the screen and the true reality of real life. Lorde doesnt write proper love songs. Her best is A World Alone, which completes the album. For the most part the songs subject deal with your usual and ordinary. No airbrushed lives in this picture, no White teeth teens, as she calls them. The kids in her world bite their nails, drink, up-chuck, fights and sometimes screw around. Theyre bored, restless, scared, self-absorbed but also optimistic. Theres some laughter, ambition and success too. Glory and Gore, too, rehashes the same bloody/regal/teen imagery ting again, perhaps a little over stuffed lyrically, but the message gets through. All up its The Wonder Years, set in a typical Auckland Grammar School. All up the irony and carefully balanced apathy of youth is what makes Pure Heroine work. This is a record that walks the line between rebellion and revelation in the potential trapping of vicarious power and luxury. A sneer at those other pop mistresses, a slap in the face of but a self implication too, of the very contradictions shes exposing.

SAT 12 OCT
SECRET LIFE OF A MANIC DEPRESSIVE
LIVING CHANNEL, 9.30PM

Kiwi director Andrew Adamson has a gift for the fantastical, what with the huge success of the Shrek and Narnia films. WithMr. Pip, he shows sensitivity for epic, emotional drama too. Faithfully adapting the moving Lloyd Jones award-winning novelMister Pip, this is a fairly earnest retelling of one girls life-changing encounter with a mysterious teacher, who reads Charles DickensGreat Expectationsto her otherwise educationally barren classroom in late-80s, war-torn Bougainville. One of the biggest challenges must have been how to tell the story of the man telling a story without him having to constantly tell the story. Adamson cleverly gets around this by illustrating Matildas thoughts with her own filtered ideal of the Dickensian world. Cue striking images of an island paradise transformed

into a tropical version of London, Matilda and Pip in colourful finery. Its exactly what youd imagine her version of the story would be. Its also a pleasure to see Papua New Guinea on the big screen, and Adamson, who spent his teenaged years there, offers a loving ode to its beauty and culture, using the stunning setting, and all its delightful details crabs, ants, shimmering water to great effect. But ultimately the performances steal the show. Hugh Laurie as the childrens teacher Mr Watts is both hauntingly sad and inspiring, and the captivating Xzannjah as Matilda is a natural. My only criticism is that it couldve benefited from a little more levity. However, Adamson has cut some of the bleaker scenes, delivering a film that still delivers a punch to the gut.
REBECCA BARRY HILL

Stephen Fry is quite frankly one of the greatest gifts that mankind has ever had the precious fortune of being given. The workings of his mind and articulation of his thoughts is certainly a sight to behold especially when dealing with such a powerful topic.

LE T T I L S A W I N E H W G I B
GROWING UP, ELIZA DOOLITTLE IS NO LONGER AFRAID TO GET PERSONAL. Its hard to imagine Eliza Doolittle being a demanding diva. Greeting me with her gorgeous London accent, the singer-songwriter tells me in her breezy, carefree way that its her mums birthday and shes taking her out for brunch this particular morning. But when talking about her music and the learning curve she experienced, Elizas tone changes and isnt afraid to reprimand herself for Madonna-like behaviour in the studio. I had to tell myself to, basically, shut the fuck up, laughs Doolittle. The expletive comes with a foray of giggles, as the 25-year-old recalls the biggest mistake I ever made during the recording process of her sophomore album, In Your Hands. Making her mark on the music scene in 2010 with her self-titled debut, Doolittles pop-infused, R&B-inspired hits were getting plenty of airplay during the northern summer months and resulted in the album entering the UK album chart at number three. Just 21 years old, the singers success saw her tour the UK, support fellow Brit singer Paloma Faith and perform on a number of TV shows. But like many young Brits and Kiwis, Doolittle was looking for more and took herself on a world tour essentially, a big OE. I know that you guys are so far away from a lot of things, I can imagine you need to get out and see the world, she empathises, but its not that far off for us too. There is so much in me that wants to travel and see the world. I literally want to go to every corner of the Earth to play music to as many people as possible. One of the more unlikely choices was a trip to South America a place Doolittle admits not many people go on their first album, but somewhere she had always wanted to go and was surprisingly well-received by many who had never heard her music before. Heading to just about every place she could pack in Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Brazil it was in the southeastern country of Argentina where she found her groove, and was inspired to get back to work. I felt so alive there, she says. We all went out tango dancing one night. I had just gone through a break up and I was feeling terrible. I dont know what it was about the place, but I felt better. South America marked the end of the tour and I went on to the studio in Los Angeles. Just having the energy from that trip was incredible. Recorded half in the US, half in London, her return to music wasnt a smooth process. After finding success early on in the UK with her debut single Skinny Genes and the follow up release Pack Up, her expectation for perfection on round two was imminent and Doolittle says giving up control was a difficult thing to do. At the beginning, I was probably horrible to work with I was so anal! Doolittle says with a laugh. I was so frightened about what I was going to do that I wouldnt carry on until we got a snare sound right. I was quite annoying, but I learnt to let go. I got told off a little bit! I actually think I was just too frightened to not let go enough in the first few months of making the record, and I couldnt get anything. The music wasnt happening. Then eventually I did and it was much better. The album was pretty much an overnight thing because I felt so bad and I needed to let it out. It changed everything really. Best mistake I ever made. Having a very specific vision for the album was one of the main reasons control was yet to be relinquished, but Doolittle soon realised you cant be too controlling as it was driving the writers/producers, Steve Robson and Wayne Hector, insane. The people I have worked with on this album have been amazing and they have helped me be the best me I could be. I think it was about letting the people around me do what they do and I wasnt prepared to accept that at the beginning. I havent really talked about it all that much as it was quite a battle for me to put my life in other peoples hands. Her life included some very personal issues, including a serious breakup, which features from beginning to end on In Your Hands. A number of the tracks, such as Walking In Water and Dont Call It Love were about the happy times, before it came to an emotional end, inspiring the title track In Your Hands and the defiant No Man Can . I was in a bleak place, she admits. It was like Id given up: I didnt know anything other than I had to be with that person. But looking back, it was the best thing that happened. I wrote some of my favourite songs about that period of time. I learnt a lot about myself and life in general. The whole thing opened my eyes up. On this album, Ive definitely written about things that are much more honest and inside me on the last one I look outside myself and dont give so much away, but I mean, maybe I hadnt experienced too much at that age as well. It was quite hard to overcome, to let these feelings out I think some of the producers now know more about me than anyone! LAURA WEASER

! D N E G E L G N I K C U F U O Y T T E JOAN J
JAN MAREE I am sitting in my apartment waiting for my cell phone to ring. When it does Joan Jetts Bad Reputation will play; its my ringtone. Joan Jett loves rock and roll and I love Joan Jett. When GG rang and asked if Id talk to her about her new album Unvarnished I pinched myself. Hard. The phone rings. The publicist tells me she is in her car and we have strictly fifteen minutes to talk. Hello? Is this Jan? Yes. Joan? Yeah. How are you? I am great. How do I tell Joan Jett that if I died tomorrow I would die happy, that this opportunity to talk to her has made my life? Thankfully I realise this interview isnt about me. I congratulate her on the new album Unvarnished. I have listened to it twice through in preparation for this chat. It wails. Thank you, she giggles. I am pretty proud of it. Having watched her performance of the albums first single (produced by and featuring Dave Grohl) Any Weather on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the woman is looking good (she turned 55 in September) and on this new album she is sounding sensational so it must be asked: How does she do it? Oh I get asked this all the time. I dont know that there is a secret, I mean I dont go to the gym and work out. Good genes I guess. I mean I turned away from a lot of the fatty foods I used to eat when I was younger. Several years ago I became a vegetarian and I guess you know, I have a pretty active job I burn a lot of calories up on stage. I try to take care of myself. The game of fame is a serious job to Joan Jett, its a well-known fact that she is constantly touring. I learn that it was on the road that the opportunity to work with Grohl arose. We toured Chile, Argentina and Brazil with The Foo Fighters last April/ May, and you know Dave and I are friends anyway but I asked him to sit down with me... So we got together at his studio in LA and I played him what I had; it was rudimentary, I think I had the chorus music lyrics at the time. He said, lets record, me on guitar and Dave played drums and we came up with the music for the song. Unvarnished is a departure for Jett given the collaborative nature in which it was made, something shes never done before. I ask her why she chose to work with Laura Jane Grace (lead singer from punk band Against Me!). Joan explains; We both do a cover of The Repacements Androgenous (which you can hear on Jetts greatest hits album). You know she is transitioning (male to female) and we wanted to support her so we were at their concert a while back and she asked me to get up and sing Androgynous with them. I wanna support her so I asked her to write a song with me, she was into it and we pretty much wrote it together over a bunch of emails. We chatter about the power of technology in the collaborative process but what I am most interested in is the involvement of her band The Blackhearts. For the first time in their long career band mates Tommy and Dougie were involved in the creative process Joan gets animated and cuts in. Its a band album which is GREAT! I have always wanted to do this but it just never seemed like the right moment. I cant explain (other than that) it feels good, I really, really like it and I think they feel better about the process. We are really working as a band, not just in the performance, its a maturation for us. You know (the song) TMI, we were all so into that; the concept of over sharing you know? These days even on news shows there is so much transparency, celebrities are asked such deep questions and in ways answers are demanded. She stops mid-sentence. Gee I should stop talking, you probably have other questions. I urge her on as it is obvious this is something Joan feels strongly about. I ask her to compare the plight of teen stars these days (the very public meltdowns of Britney Spears, the absurdist behaviour of young stars like Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber) to her own experience as documented in the very honest and graphic biopic The Runaways charting Jetts rise to international rock fame at the age of fifteen. Oh it is a completely different world. Back then we were in a void, a bubble and we were all like bring it on so we had a lot of privacy to do what we wanted. The main thing that has been lost these days is that everything is out in the open. Twitter, Facebook there is no privacy, no fascination over the private lives of stars today. Hey, you can do whatever you want to get attention but I am a boundaries person. The music always comes first, if you become better known for your antics you start to lose the credibility of your music career. On first listening to Unvarnished I clearly heard the strong personal themes in the songs Fragile and Hard To Grown Up. Again she cuts in; Being in a rock band is like I have lived as a teenager my whole life. At some point you have to be responsible. I mean I cant piss my life away. I dont wanna grown up but II have to. I mention the passing of both her parents over the last two years. The music has been a great therapy for me, you know, I get it every night that I am on stage sharing the pain. My parents were my best friends who encouraged me to follow my dreams you know? They never said Oh Joan, dont do that They let me learn (my lessons) myself and they were proud of me you know? My mother supported me so much in the early years. My dad especially in these later years would come to concerts, enjoy himself, (sometimes) hed cry. It meant a lot losing them. I feel fragile. She goes quiet for a moment. I could cry over them (dying) while I am talking to you. (Life is) fragile. (Youre) Here one moment, gone the next. You gotta enjoy it. The publicist interrupts telling us that time is up, Joan says, We arent finished yet, I am sure that Jan has one more question. We get extra time (I have talked to my fair share of folk, none have ever asked for more time) so I ask her about her inclusion in Rolling Stones 100 Greatest Guitarists list. There are only two women on that list, her and Joni Mitchell. Why? Oh that list is so old (2003). I guarantee you if that list was written today there would be a lot of women on it. She seems unprepared to enter into a discussion over latent misogyny in performing arts, and thats fair. Like she mentioned earlier she is a boundaries person, and on this she is giving very little away. She is similarly guarded when I ask about whether she has plans to come down to New Zealand, given that her scheduled April show (with The Darkness) was pulled at the eleventh hour reportedly due to a member of The Darkness having injured his leg. Her voice is warm and sends a subtle yet strong message to her kiwi fans; Sure, I am hoping so. I mean the new album is out and you know, I hope the people will bring me down. The publicist is back on the phone saying that most definitely we are out of time. Joan thanks me for taking the time to talk, usually its my job to thank an artist. It has been most enjoyable, Ill see you when I get to New Zealand then Jan. If I loved her before I am IN love with her now, and like any diehard fan I dine out on the hope that someday she will indeed play live here. One thing is for sure; Unvarnished is proof that Joan Jett has no intention of slowing down.

NINTENDO 2DS RELEASING SAT 12 OCT

Back in August, Nintendo surprised just about everybody when they announced a new version of their popular 3DS platform which was going to drop the 3D functionality the handheld design was built around. Called the 2DS, the console - which no longer folds in half like a clam shell - is out this week (Sat 12 Oct), alongside Pokemon X and Pokemon Y. Priced at $178 ($100 less than a regular 3DS, and half the price of a 3DS XL), its cheaper to buy a 2DS and a copy of the new Pokemon game than it is to buy just a regular 3DS by itself, making Nintendos motivations suddenly much clearer to parents everywhere.

DIABLO III CONSOLE

An action role-playing game (ARPG), Diablos special blend of kill, loot, level, improve created the mould from which thousands of clones have been pressed over the years. Even World of Warcraft (and its merry band of clones) owes more than a little to Diablos dopamine-inducing mechanics. The idea is simple enough; take charge of one of five different character types (a mix of ranged and melee damage dealers, basically, with differing mechanics to spice things up) and wage war on the minions of hell. Doing so will net you gold, loot, and level you up, making you more powerful so that you can - in turn - take on ever stronger enemies. The console controls work pretty well - for the most part. The melee classes works extremely well, in fact, and will need little explanation / acclimatization time for anyone who has ever played any kind of character-based action game. You press buttons, your guy (or girl - you can choose the gender of your character) performs the associated attack; so far, so good. Theres also - brand new for the console version - a dodge ability; performed by pushing the right stick in the direction you want to attack. The controls work pretty well for ranged characters too. You aim and move with the left stick, and then press buttons to cast magic / fire arrows / etc. Attacks that use the buttons, however, necessitate moving your right thumb from the button to the stick and then back again, which might lead you to occasionally face your character in the wrong direction. Its a minor quirk, nothing more.

GRAN TURISMOS GOT BATHURST, TOO

Sony have announced that PlayStation 3 racing game Gran Turismo 6 (releasing Fri 06 Dec) will include the famous Mount Panorama racing circuit, located in Bathurst (Australia.) The Bathurst 12 Hour race, which is based on the track, is one of the most popular motorsport events in the world, and many racing enthusiasts will know its layout better than the route they drive to get home from work each day. Sonys announcement follows one made by Microsoft in September, when the company confirmed that the track will also feature in their flagship Xbox One racing game Forza Motorsport 5, which releases alongside the new console on November 22nd.

Despite being a commercial smash-hit, Diablo III on PC also managed to stir up quite a bit of controversy thanks to two major features: you always had to be online to play, and there was a communal auction house that let people buy powerful items using either gold or cash. Vocal gamers decried both inclusions, and theyll likely be pleased that Blizzard have opted to leave them out of the console version, making this the definitive variant of Diablo III for some. Otherwise, Diablo III is a masterpiece. Theres lots of monsters to kill, loot to horde, and you can do it all with friends, all in Blizzards grand, epic style. Get into it.

Whats the ethos of your store/clothing line? It was born out of a creative curiosity, a rulebreaking spirit and attitude, and a visual artists eye, my work and design has been and still is, an on-going practice of exploration, play, constantly trialing ideas. I start to think I am refining my style, but then it is interchangeable, maybe depending on my mood or the moon? Which historical figure had some wicked style? Janice Joplin! Bangles galore, shades, tassles, fringe, feathers, colour, vibrance, funk, freedom, power, soul. She represents all the wahine freedom fighters of the revolutionary 60s who wanted to change the way things were and burn the bra! Societys biggest fashion faux-pas? Heels - that are stupidly impossible to walk in!! Cmon people we need to at least be abe to dance!I I dont mind wedges, and heels that are comfortable enough, but some are rediculous! It pisses me off that so many women feel they need to wear them to be hot. I dont think you look hot when you are that uncomfortable! You look foolish! Whats the must-have look this season? Vibrant, fun, funky, sexy, fitted dresses, bold patterns and colours. Mix it up with loose floaty, kaftan, sheer fabrics, tops and skirts, wear tight with loose over top. Also mix rugged with elegant and pretty Ive been making some gorgeous Kimono inspired dressing gowns with fringe, designed to be worn over casual ripped jeans shorts and singlets. Colours/patterns big this season? AFRICAN prints, fabrics, patterns are right IN this season! Bold, bright, colourful, and animal prints Ive never been into animal prints before but at the moment I cannot resist! I am so excited to be apart of the Africa of my sleeve fashion show event, its been hugely inspiring delving into a different cultural style. What are the essentials for a mans wardrobe? A solid shirt with pockets on the chest, specifically one of the Selector Safari Shirts, by Selector clothing, my partner owns one, and theres something about those pockets on the chest that is really hot! What are the essentials for a ladys wardrobe? Black strapless bra, fitted mini dress, that can be worn under practically anything, especially seethrough things!! Hyphenate three words to describe your style: Eclectic-fun-bold.

TAIN N U O M E H T F O S E R U T A E CR
Mountaineaters biography says it all, a band that takes the intangibility of experiencing a natural landscape and turns into sound. Frontman Tristan Dingeman, formerly of HDU, says that comes from his love for monumental art and the local Dunedin scenery. He says there isnt much more inspiring than the juxtaposition of being in a plane and watching the mountain ranges, the ranges where Mountaineater got their name and the same mountains that guarded Dunedin during the two year recording process of the self titled album. Dingeman says the bands name comes from a Maori myth he was told growing up. [Its] about a giant that eats mountains. He eats this mountain, gives it a really good crack, and then chokes and dies on the last piece, its said that his body forms the top of the mountain. An appropriate metaphor for the amount of the emotional sweat and grit that was poured into recording the self titled debut. Dingeman describes the album in five words as an epic journey reaching fruition and both artistically and personally it has been exactly that, an epic journey. I had it fairly hard at times with traumatic personal stuff which contributed massively to it taking 22 months. It took forever to get the guitars tracked. Wed work for a couple of weeks and then take a couple of months off. The time off was spent paying the bills and feeding mouths. Mountaineater, as with many kiwi artists, arent able to make a living off their art, which means it came second to much of their life. But Dingeman is quick to point out that there are two sides to a situation. There was no label behind us hammering deadlines, which was both a luxury and a curse. On the luxury side, Dingeman says the album is better for it. Its more emotional and he was able to spend more time on each of the songs. Ive always wanted to try and make something original. He says the lyrics tectonic shift/eggshell fragile/like my brain is on my mood swings. Are an example of the rawness of Mountaineater and the time that hes spent crafting the songs. If there were a theme behind the album, Dingeman says its about marching through storm and continuing on with life. Its like saying youve gone through the shit and youve carried the storm cloud like its a chip on your shoulder. Much of the music, Dingeman says, harks back to the early days of Mountaineater when the first set of recorded material was released it. Despite the long time space, theyre thematically linked. A lot of it springs out of the subconscious, Mutter and Sunfire [previous releases] both reference the sun, Sunfire is an instrumental but the reference is in the title, and Mutter references it in the lyrics. He says that Seasonal Defective Disorder is something hes noticed around Dunedin and that it does reflect in the imagery of songs, as it reflects in the way Dingeman talks. Despite this being the debut of Mountaineater, Dingemans former project was HDU, and he says the key to bringing fans back to the music is for the artist to make it interesting for themselves. I start with a riff or chord progression. Mountaineater was written beginning to end by me and theres an arch to it [the songs]. It starts, it develops and it finishes, but we [the band] tweak it together. Mountaineater record their rehearsals and writing sessions and Dingeman says he spends a lot of time going through the recordings and finding the the best parts of a session. [Its] divine inspiration playing together. All of this from a man who received very little training and isnt hindered by not knowing the names of chords but has built bands and albums out of feeling his way through. Its hard not to be impressed by Mountaineaters self titled, when you give this record a play, you can hear the twists and turns of two years recording and it sounds well and truly worth it.
