HISD board approves 3-cent tax hike...
Chronicle report / Thursday, October 10, 2013 The Houston school board voted 4-3 Thursday to raise the tax rate by 3 cents to balance a budget that includes raises for employees and continues the Apollo reform program. The original proposal called for a 4-cent increase, which would have given the district several million dollars more than was needed to balance the budget. The board ultimately agreed to a proposal by trustee Harvin Moore to raise the rate by 3 cents and to take $5 million from the district’s savings account. Trustees Moore, Paula Harris, Larry Marshall and Rhonda Skillern-Jones voted for the tax increase. Anna Eastman, Mike Lunceford and Juliet Stipeche, who opposed the budget in June, voted against the increase. Trustee Manuel Rodriguez was absent as expected. He said he would have voted for the increase. Trustee Greg Meyers also was absent. He said he had an unexpected work conflict. Meyers voted for the budget in June but said he would have voted against raising taxes. The new tax rate is $1.1867 per $100 of taxable value of your property. FORWARDED BY: Allan R.
