5 Rhetorical Literary Devices


1. Rhetorical Question
A question asked merely for effect with no answer expected. (Ex: Why are you so smart?)

Emotive Language

Language that evokes emotions from the reader. (Ex: Imagine your kids being cast out into the street, cold, lonely &frightened.)

Parallel Structures

Two or more words, phrases, or clauses similar in length and grammatical form. (Ex: To show kindness is praiseworthy; to show hatred is evil.)

Description & Imagery

A vivid descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste). Uses metaphors, similes and personifications (Ex: He charged like an angry bull.)

5.

The Rule of Three

States that concepts or ideas presented in threes are more interesting, more enjoyable, and more memorable and that events should happen in groups of three. (Exs: The Three Musketeers / The Three Little Pigs / She was beautiful. She was perfect. She was everything he couldnt have)
