APES- Fertilizing the Sea Activity Instructions: Read the article- as you read, highlight reasons scientists give

for and against fertilizing the ocean with nutrients. Fill in the t-chart- PROS (for fertilizing) and CONS (against fertilizing).

Microscopic plants would draw carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to support photosynthesis. Establish fisheries in otherwise nutrient-poor waters. Measured a 60% drop in the flow of carbon dioxide from the ocean to the atmosphere. We could sequester in the deep ocean to 1/3 the amount of carbon dioxide that the U.S. puts into the atmosphere. Creates phytoplankton blooms in fertilized patches of the ocean.

You cant expect to duplicate just by pouring nutrients into the water. Some problems may not be apparent without an extensive and expensive, biological sample effort. Once you kill the reefs in that area, which you probably would do, its not clear they would ever come back. Potential for problems.

An oxygen-depleting process resulting from organic decay that has led to deleterious environmental consequences in lakes and coastal cones throughout the world.

Conclusion: What is your opinion of ocean fertilization? Give specific reasons from the list above to support your opinion. My opinion on ocean fertilization is that it is something to highly consider. It has many pros but it also has many cons. This could have potential for significant benefits for humanity, such as having a 60% drop in the flow of carbon dioxide from the ocean to the atmosphere. I believe this is something that should be tried in an area because otherwise we will watch the ocean slowly crumble and wont be able to say that we at least tried. Although this does have consequences that could happen, we should try and decrease the chances of these to happen.
