Ecology Survivor

3rd period

What are Earths resources?

1. The energy in these resources comes from energy from the sun 2. Examples are wood, soil, air, water, rocks, petroleum, minerals, forests, wildlife, coal and wind 3. A natural resource is Used to maintain life & is any material from Earth used by organisms

What types of resources exist on Earth?

1. Nonrenewable resources are used much faster than they can be replaced, while renewable resources are natural resources that can be replaced as quickly as people use them 2. Renew means to begin again, but Renewable resources may become nonrenewable if you use them too quickly 3. Natural resources are grouped based on how fast they can be replaced. Renewable: sun, trees, fresh water; Nonrenew: coal, petroleum

How can we protect natural resources?

1. Recycling means using things that have been thrown away to make new objects. For example, we can recycle paper, plastic, and aluminum to conserve minerals

2. Three ways we can conserve: reduce, reuse, recycle because if we use too much energy now we might use up these resources 3. Conserving resources also means taking care of them even when you are not using them, Dont keep anything unused turned on (appliance, lights, water, etc.)

What are fossil fuels?

1. Fossil fuels take millions of years to produce. They are An energy resource made from the remains of plants and tiny animals that lived long ago. They are nonrenewable. 2. When fossil fuels burn, they release a lot of energy, When fossil fuels are burned they cause pollution 3. The different kinds of fossil fuels are petroleum, coal, and natural gas

Natural Gas
1. Natural gas is a hydrocarbon, which is a compound that contains the elements carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, all in the form of gases, Natural gas includes methane, propane, and butane they can be separated from one another 2. Most natural gases are used for heating, Can be dangerous because it burns easily 3. Some of the sea life that dies today will become natural gas millions of years from now

Petroleum
1. Petroleum is a mixture of hydrocarbons in the form of liquids. Very valuable, so its sometimes called black gold; It is also known as crude oil 2. Petroleum products provide more than 40% of the worlds energy 3. Can be used as fuel for planes, trains, boats, ships, and cars. Gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel fuel are made from petroleum

Coal
1. Like other fossil fuels, coal releases heat when it burns. Causes a lot of pollution, which leads to acid rain 2. Coal was once the main source of energy in the US 3. Coal is a solid fossil fuel Made of decayed parts of plant material, An organic sedimentary rock. Examples are peat, lignite, and bituminous

What is alternative energy?

1. Sources of energy that are not fossil fuels. Dont cause as much pollution as fossil fuels 2. Renewable resources: Examples: wind, sun, nuclear, geothermal, biomass 3. Can be converted easily into usable energy. Some types of alternative energy are not easy to use

Types of Alternative Energy

1. Nuclear energy is created from the fission and fusion of atoms. One benefit of fusion is that it does not cause air pollution 2. Chemical energy is released when hydrogen and oxygen react to form water. Fuel cells are devices that change chemical energy to electric power. Some cars use fuel cells instead of gas 3. Biomass is using a once-living resource (organic matter) through the process of burning to produce energy 4. Hydroelectric energy can be produced only in places that have a lot of fast moving water. Hydro is inexpensive, renewable, and causes no pollution 5. Some forms of alternative energy cause pollution, but not nearly as much as fossil fuels. Examples are: Nuclear Energy (fusion and fission), Hydroelectric energy, Solar energy, Geothermal energy, Wind power, Gasohol, Fuel cells (Chemical energy), Biomass
