ASE 311 Engineering computation, Fall 2013, Homework 1 Due: Wednesday, September 18, 12:00 noon in the lecture

room WRW 1.102 or canvas Report all work, including any m-les you have written. You may also nd the commands fopen, fprintf and fclose useful in recording and printing your MATLAB output. Please write clearly and be sure to label for which problem each solution is.

1. Compute manually the limits L1 = lim sin x x0 x and L2 = lim 1 cos x x 0 x2

You may rely on the Maclaurin series for sin, cos: sin x = x x3 x5 + 3! 5! and cos x = 1 x2 x4 + 2! 4!

2. Compute L1 and L2 using MATLAB by evaluating the expressions sin x/x and (1 cos x)/x2 at x = 10i , i = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Do you observe something strange? 3. Dene the Taylor polynomial of the following function f (x) =
1 1x

at the point x0 .

4. Considering the Maclaurin series for cos x and starting with the simplest version, cos x = 1, add terms one at a time to estimate cos(/4). After each new term is added, compute the true and approximate percent relative errors. Use MATLAB to determine the true value. Add terms until the absolute value of the approximate error estimate falls below an error criterion conforming to two signicant gures. 5. If |x| < 1 it is known that 1 = 1 + x + x2 + x3 + 1x Repeat Prob. 4 for this series for x = 0.1.
