College Mentors for Kids STEM Activity

Overview The purpose of this activity is to teach children the basics of adding fractions that have both the same denominators and different denominators. This is a basic skill that will be used over and over again during future years in education and one every elementary student should be able to master. Using candy as a tool to help the learning process, the hands-on activity creates a more interactive and fun way of learning for the children, further enhancing their motivation and willingness to learn the information taught. Learning Objectives Given between 1 and 10 objects, the little buddies will be able to pick a color and find its fraction relative to the total amount with 100% accuracy. Given 2 fractions with different denominators (between 2 to 10), the little buddies will be able to add the fractions with 100% accuracy. Given 2 fractions with the same denominators (between 2 to 10),, the little buddies will be able to add the fractions with 100% accuracy. Teaching Standards Adding fractions with the same and different denominators Comparing fractions with different denominators. Required Materials 1. Fun size skittles/M&Ms for each little buddy and big buddy. 2. Worksheets for each little buddy 3. Paper towels for each little and big buddy (for the candy)

Procedures 1. Have each little buddy sit next to his or her big buddy and give each a bag of candy. 2. The little buddies will then count how many total pieces of candy they have. 3. Ask the little buddies to count how many red pieces of candy they have 4. They will then use the smart board to write the answer they have (red/total pieces) 5. Ask the students to choose 2 of the fractions written on the board that have the same denominator and have them add the two. (all work on the same 2 fractions) 6. Then ask the students to choose 2 fractions with the different denominators and have them add those two fractions. (all work on the same 2 fractions) 7. After all the little buddies finished, have them write their final answer on the board and give them a chance to compare their final answers as a group. Assessment The students will demonstrate the skills and knowledge they acquired by answering three questions at the bottom of the provided worksheet, individually. Each question will ask them to add or compare two fractions. References "Common Core State Standards Initiative | Mathematics | Grade 5 | Number & Operations Fractions."
