ordinary Afghans are viewed as free cannon fodder by US / Nato armies. On a very regular basis, Nato special forces soldiers execute Afghan men, women and even children on the suspicion they are involved in aiding the insurgency or that (one or more of) their relatives were insurgents and were allowed to take shelter in their homes. This kind of midnight horror is an exact repeat of the experience endured by civilian groups in the Mekong delta of south-eastern Vietnam during the Vietnam conflict. Apart from the deliberate killings of Afghan civilians by their foot soldiers, Nato armies also regularly kill Afghan civilians through their air attacks or their so-called ‘close air support’ missions. Such missions have been responsible for expending millions of pounds of munitions against Afghans since 2001. Up to ten percent of the munitions do not explode on contact with the ground and such unexploded but live munitions have killed or maimed many thousands of Afghan civilians especially small children. Afghan civilians most heavily affected by such deadly incidents are also among the most impoverished people in the land and who live outside the capital Kabul in the areas next to Pakistan where most of Nato’s CAS missions take place.
