Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems PROBLEMS: 1. Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminum powder A. Procedure: First, the weight of a beaker was measured on a scale. Then, aluminum powder was powered onto a teaspoon. A stirring rod was swiped over the surface of the teaspoon to assure that the amount of aluminum powder was exactly one teaspoon. Then, the aluminum powder was poured into the weighted beaker. A new measurement was measured on the same scale. B. Data Table: Beaker Beaker with Aluminum Powder 36.81 Aluminum Powder (1 teaspoon) 1.33

Mass (g):

35.48

Calculations: (The mass of one teaspoon of aluminum powder) 36.81g - 35.48g =1.33g C. Conversions (mass to Atoms) Molar Mass of Aluminum: 26.9815386 1 Mole= 6.022 x 1023 Atoms Mass of Al (g) / 1 Mole of Al / Molar Mass of Al =Number of Moles of Al 1.33 (g) of Al / 1 Mol of Al / / 26.9815386 (g) / =2.968422268 x 1022 Atoms =2.97 x 1022 Atoms 6.022 x 1023 Atoms 1 mol

Concluding Statement: There are 2.97 x 1022 Atoms of Aluminum in one teaspoon of Aluminum Powder. 2. Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder A. Procedure: First, the weight of a beaker was weighed on a scale. Then iron powder was poured onto a teaspoon. The iron powder on the teaspoon was poured into the same beaker that was weighed. The beaker with the iron powder was weighed on the same scale. B. Data Table: Beaker Beaker with Iron Powder (1 teaspoon) 41.27 Iron Powder (1 teaspoon) 5.79

Mass (g):

35.48

Calculations: (The mass of one teaspoon of iron powder) 41.27g - 35.48g =5.79g

C. Conversions: Molar Mass of iron: 55.845g Molar Mass of Fe (g) 1 teaspoon of Fe (g) =How many teaspoons needed for 1 mole of Fe 55.845g 5.79g =9.64507772 spoons =9.65 spoons

Concluding Statement: 9.65 level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mole of iron powder 3. Determine how many atoms of zinc are present in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal (you cannot cut the foil) A. A piece of zinc was weighed on a scale. Then, it was measured with a ruler to assure that its area was 2.00 cm2

B. Data Table: Zinc Metal (2 cm2)

Mass (g)

1.06

C. Conversions (m=mass to atoms) Molar mass of Zinc=65.38g 1 Mole= 6.022 x 1023 Atoms Mass of Zn (g) / 1 Mole of Zn / Molar Mass of Zn =Number of Moles of Al 1.06 (g) of Zn / 1 Mol of Zn / 65.38 (g) =9.763413888 x 1021 Atoms =9.76 x 1021 Atoms Concluding Statement: 9.76 x 1021 atoms of zinc are present in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal 4. Determine what length of copper wire needed to provide 2.00 mol of copper. A. Procedure: First, the mass of 2 moles of copper wire was calculated. (value represented by J). Then the weight of the given copper wire was determined. (value represented by M) Next, the length of the given copper wire was measured. (value represented by L) B. Data Table: Given Copper Wire (M) Mass (g): 1.84 2 moles of Copper (J) (calculated) 127.10 Length of Copper Wire (L) Length: 10.15cm / / 6.022 x 1023 Atoms 1 mol

C. Conversions:

J (g) /

L (cm) M (g) / /

= length of 2 moles of Copper Wire

127.10 (g)

10.15 (cm) 1.84 (g)

= length of 2 moles of Copper Wire

=701.122cm =701.12cm

Concluding Statement: 2 moles of Copper Wire will measure 701.12 cm long.
