Foreign Vehicles
At the beginning of World War II the German Armies Ordnance department started a system for listing data on all known foreign vehicles, guns and other equipment. This information was published in a series of loose leaf books known as the Kennblater Fremdengerat or D.50 series. Throughout the war, these books/manuals were periodically updated with new information on new weapons and equipment captured. In total there were 14 volumes in the D.50 series and they are: D.50/1 D.50/2 D.50/3 D.50/4 D.50/5 D.50/6 D.50/12 D.50/14 Hand weapons, (pistols, rifles, sub-machine guns etc) Machine guns (light, medium and heavy) Mortars Light Artillery Medium Artillery Heavy Artillery Motor vehicles (armoured cars, tanks, self-propelled guns, armoured tractors, artillery tractors, semi-tracked vehicles/carriers) Engineer equipment (mines, grenades, fuses, demolitions charges etc)

Throughout the war, the Germans made maximum use of captured equipment to assist in the shortfall of their own production capabilities. The Germans developed a system whereby all captured equipment was designated a number followed by a letter denoting the weapons place of origin. These number and letter configurations were known as Fremdgerat designations/numbers. Some captured equipment especially artillery, were re-bored to accept German ammunition, example: - Russian 76.2cm to take 7.5cm ammunition and the 8.5cm to take 8.8cm ammunition. This was especially so once the captured ammunition for these weapons started to become scarce. Motor Vehicle Fremdgerat Designations 200 300 400 600 630 700 800 Armoured cars Semi-tracked vehicles Armoured semi-tracked vehicles Fully-tracked artillery tractors Armoured artillery tractors Tanks (which includes the British/Commonwealth armoured universal carries) Self-propelled guns

The above lists are far from complete but should give one and indication of the German numbering system that applied to the use of foreign built vehicles and tanks used by them. Many once they became un-repairable would find themselves being used as either target tanks on firing ranges or as dug-in bunkers at fortified locations. For those who are wargaming buffs like myself. Especially those who enjoy playing the German side nearly all the time, remember a good many of these vehicles would be found within your units. The Flamethrower Abteilung 100 that went to Russia in June 1941; was equipped with Sdkfz 122s as well as 744(e) cruiser tanks, (thats the A13 cruiser tank for those who dont know). Compiled by A. J. Ralston Note: - This file is still not complete and I have at least another 5 10 pages to add belonging to the captured weapons numbers section, dealing with heavy artillery, anti-aircraft, anti-tank guns, machine-guns etc. These at present I am still researching and awaiting information from various reference libraries around Australia. This unfortunately is going to time an unknown time limit.
