Leverage Your Google+ Brand Page to Improve Click Through Rate On Content

Google+ is the future of search. Believe it.
If you aren’t on Google+, you're on the path to irrelevance. As Search Engine Watch recently reported, Google's Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt writes the following in his upcoming book, "The Digital Age": “ Within search results, information tied to verified online profiles will be ranked higher than content without such verification, which will result in most users naturally clicking on the top (verified) results. The true cost of remaining anonymous, then, might be irrelevance.” You may have heard of or seen Google Authorship in action - when an authors picture shows up to content in search results. One of the most frequently asked questions is whether or not this is possible for a company. The answer: yes and no. You can’t use Authorship for pages but there are some other new methods that Google has indicated may place your logo next to your content in search results in the near future. Right now, Google’s rel=publisher tag provides Google with information that can be used to determine the relevancy of a company’s site by linking a company’s Google+ page to the company’s website. This does not result in your logo next to search results - YET. There are three options for doing this: PAGE 1

Step 1: Create a Google+ Business Page If your company does not already have a Google+ business page setup, you will need to create one before implementing this tag. If you already have a Google+ business page, you may proceed to Step 2. Step 2: Add the Rel=Publisher Tag Add the rel=publisher tag within the head tag of your homepage or the most significant page on your website. The HTML to insert into the head tag should look like this: <link href=”Your Company’s Google+ Page URL” rel=”publisher”/> Once the above HTML has been added to your website, you will then have to create a link on your Google+ business page that points back to your website. This link should be the exact URL for the page that the above link was added to. Step 3: Request Verification After the appropriate links have been added to both the company’s website and the corresponding Google+ business page, the final step for adding the rel=publisher tag is to request verification from Google. This is Google’s way of verifying that the Google+ page can be trusted. To go through this process, you must first meet the requirements listed on the Google+ page verification request form, and then complete and submit the form. Step 4: Test Once the above steps have been completed, test to make sure that the rel=publisher tag has been implemented correctly. This can be easily done through Google’s rich snippet testing tool. If the rel=publisher tag is implemented correctly, this tool will display the markup as it would appear in the Google search results.

Rel=Publisher and Rel=Author
With the information from a company’s Google+ business page taking up 50 percent of the right side of the SERP (search engine results page), it’s easy to see how the rel=publisher tag enhances a brand in Google’s search results. However, in order for a user to see these enhanced results, they must search for that company by name and location, requiring that they already know the brand. However, for those who are not searching for a specific company, and are performing nonbranded searches, the rel=author tag provides a great way for businesses to get their brand in front of prospective customers for the first time, and at the right time. Here are the ways Google authorship and the rel=author tag in particular can help increase an SMB's brand awareness, and also allow it to take advantage of brand recognition. • Your Google+ page will be recognized as the "official" page for your brand and give it search preference over scrapers. Searchers using Google+ Direct Connect can quickly navigate to your Google+ page when using Google search. An increase in +1's. All +1s done on the site, on the Google+ page, in search results, and on AdWords ads will be aggregated. Build relevance and trust for the brand. Your web content, Google+ activities and other social media activity will all be associated with your Google+ page.
