How to Hypnotize--A Six Day Course

Course Author: Steven Hall MCOH MASC NLP

How to Hypnotize Lesson One: What is hypnosis? Welcome to your first hypnotic lesson! It s great that you re interested in hypnosis and I know you ll be eager to get started today we re going to get all of the prepar ation work out of the way, so you can begin the induction process ASAP! First off, we need to answer the question, What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, there s nothing mysterious or magic al about it and everyone drifts in and out of trance many times a day without ev en realizing it! If a person is in hypnosis it is possible to communicate directly with their sub conscious mind. The subconscious mind doesn t critique or reason in the same way t hat the conscious mind does. It just does what it s told. So, if you tell a person that s fully alert that they re a ballerina, they ll compare this to what they already know to be true, and then dismiss it and tell you that you re wrong. If they re in a trance, they just accept it, and will be more than hap py to pirouette across the stage! There are many misconceptions about trance, so let s get those out of the way and we can press on with the more exciting side of hypnosis! Hypnosis is not the same as sleep, when you are hypnotized you ll be able to hear everything a hypnotist says. It is impossible to become stuck in hypnosis. If a hypnotist sneaks away and leave s you in trance, you ll either wake up straight away, after a few minutes, or, if you are very tired, you might fall into normal sleep and wake up once rested.

A hypnotist can t make you do anything . You re in control, if you re not happy with a sug estion you can just refuse to do it. Similarly, they can t probe inside and discov er your darkest secrets. You may have seen a TV show where a hypnotist appears t o do this, but please bare in mind that the volunteers know he ll be probing and t hey wouldn t be on the show if they truly wanted the secret kept secret! Trance isn t exactly what it appears to be, a hypnotist doesn t hypnotise a person; they simply act as a guide and help the person to hypnotise themselves! In fact, all hypnosis is self hypnosis! So, as you learn how to hypnotise people, all yo u re really learning is how to help them hypnotise themselves. Now you know your r ole I want to quickly give you an overview of the entire trance process before we end your first lesson. The trance process has some very specific stages, and you ll need to learn all of them if you re going to make it as a hypnotist. First off we have the pre-hypnotic talk. This is an informal chat that you have with your client before any trance work begins. If you re on stage, it s everything you do and say while getting your volunteers! Next we have the actual induction process. There are lots of ways to do this and it s much simpler than you probably imagine. After the induction is complete you lead straight into a trance deepener. Next is the important part and that s what yo u do with the trance state, this can be some therapy, a stage routine or perhaps something more exotic, like discovering past lives. Once the trance has served its purpose you make use of a few post hypnotic suggestions then close by waking the client.

Don t make this too obvious! Next in the hypnotic language tool box we have presuppositions. and neither will they. as well as gathering important information that yo u can use to create the therapy. Obviously. otherwise they l l think it couldn t have been hypnosis! Also be sure they know they won t get stuck in trance and you re not going to make them reveal secrets. I don t know if you will go into trance i mmediately or take a few minutes to relax yourself into it slowly. They slip straight past conscious scru tiny and really help you to manipulate the situation in the direction you want i t to go and this isn t just great for hypnotising somebody! You can use these for a lmost anything! To make your command. but do this very subtly. the pre-induction talk. Think of some useful commands you can give and practise hiding these in sentence s you re likely to use during the pre-hypnotic chat. How to Hypnotize Lesson Two: Pre-Induction Talk Today we re looking at the first stage of the hypnotic process. This helps to put thei . I know that you probably want to get on to the induction process. You ll need to highlight the command so the subconscious mind can pick it out from the rest of the sentence. you don t even consider the option to not enter trance. All of this goes on without your client realisi ng from their perspective. but it s much more than that! During this stage you ll be using lots of embedded commands. It appears to be an in formal chat used to gather information. you use these to offer a false choice to your client. but beli eve me. yet both are to go into trance. a slight change in voice ton ality will be more than enough. Embedded commands are commands that you hide inside your normal conversation and are aimed at a client s subconscious mind. embedded commands. then hide this command inside a sentence. you ll also need to use this time to remove any misconception about tra nce. other to ensure a fast induction. When you go into trance you ll still be able to hear my voice. this stage is much more interesting (and important) than many people giv e it credit! The pre-induction talk is your chance to prime your client. go into trance is a great command and can be hidden in the sentence. eg. you re just having a friendly chat! So let s get sneaky! First off. make sure your client understands they ll hear you throughout. You ll also be increas ing rapport with your client. Some of these will be used to aid the therapy. For example. first decide what you want a client to do. Here you prese nt two options.

How to Hypnotize Lesson Three: Induction Today we re jumping right into the induction process! You ll be using some of the te chniques you learnt yesterday so I hope you had plenty of time to practise. the other will soon follow. There are a number of things that cause trance. or exci ted just by changing your own state a little at a time! And remember to practise those embedded commands! Maybe you can have some fun ge tting someone to make tea or buy a round of drinks! First off. be friendly and just let it flow. but to get you started we re gonna focus o n relaxation. listen out for the kind of words the client uses. they will say things like. You can see this hap pening all around you everyday. so step one is to go through a relaxation proce ss to really help them to let go. A great way to do this is to have them systema tically tense and then relax each muscle group in turn. c onfusion. if they are in rapport a nd one changes position. If your client is using visual phrases then you should too. People rarely know how to relax. And when a client likes you. they trust you and it s mu ch. other think in sounds. once you have rapport with your client. You should use this time to get to know our client a little better.r mind at ease and makes for a much more agreeable client. Then put yourself in that system too! Gain rapport with people and see if you can make them more relaxed. some tend to use visual words a lot. this will dramatical ly increase rapport levels. I can really grasp that concept . People generally fall into three categories. watch couples chatting. much easier to hypnotise them! Practise standard phrases in each system so you can use the appropriate one when needed. such as I see what you mean and they think in pic tures. the mains ones are relaxation. . decide on the com mand then hide it in a normal sounding sentence. Now it s time to start practising! Go and chat to anyone and see how long it takes for you to work out which system they re using. To increase rapport. Your client will i nstinctively follow your lead to maintain rapport with you. and are likely to say. and speak in the same language they do. begin to slightly slow things down and move everything to a more relaxed place. shock and repetition. That sounds good to me and so me tend to think by feelings. Shock and confusion are fantastic when you move onto more dynamic induction techniques.

and. You are listening to the sound of my voice as you begin to relax a little deeper now. such as: Rapid eye movements (REMS). and be sure to use all of the lan guage patterns you ve discovered so far. To use these simp ly feedback the client s current situation and then tag on a direction that you wa nt them to follow. Your eyes are closed and perhaps you are wondering how you will go into tra nce. simply record your induction and listen back to it yourself. This is a great way to pr actise. It helps if you feedback a few statements first. Most people that do this are shocked at how fast they speak. it doesn t matter what words you use or their precise order. You are listening to the sound of my voice as you relax and sit comfortably with your eyes closed causing you to feel even more relaxed now taking you deeper and deeeepeeeer in trance. sloooow it down. while. changes in breathing pattern. Continue in this way all over the client s body. If you feel as thoug h it s going to fast. A great thing to do is imagine the client doesn t understand English and you have to relax them with your tonality and pace alone. soaking around your ankles and allowing your calf muscles to relax now . when you re o n the receiving end of your induction you quickly realise how slowing everything down makes a massive difference. Talk slowly and begin to draaaaag out your wo rds.doesn t that feel better. To get you started here s a quick sample that includes all of the factors we ve look ed at so far . . That s pretty much all there is to a basic progressive relaxation induction! Of co urse. listen to my voice and focus on your feet relaxing. digestive system kicking in (you might even hear stomach rumbles!) When you hypnotise a person you re not casting a spell. You re simply relaxing them. that s good. just use a nice calming reassuring tone and give the clien t relaxing suggestions. a s well as including a few new ones! Linguistic bridges are fantastic ways to assist the induction. If you ve done a good job of establishing rapport with your client. as you sl ow things down they ll shift into a much deeper state too. or take a little time to really enjoy this process as you begin to feel it happening right now. It helps to move around the body as you did with the ten sing and relaxing exercise. so it will g o something like this . jaw hanging limp and loose. as you do. causes an d makes as the trance develops you ll begin to notice signs of trance. Make good use of the suggestive language patterns that we looked at yesterday. be coming more and more comfortable now as this feeling eases up into your lower le gs. you do need to deepen the trance state and we ll be going into that in your next lesson. so begin to really slow things down. as. I want you to focus on your feet for a moment.Once your client in suitably relaxed you want to take it down a level or two. Many hypnotic scripts are available but you really don t need one. just breath. Just relax and hear my voice. flushed cheeks. Just enjoy this feeling as it slowly spreads up to your knees. For now get practising!! If you can t find a willing volunteer. With each breath you can imagine your feet are relaxing more and more. To link your statements and commands use words such as. I don t know if you will go into trance immediately. relaxed facial muscles. that s fin e. twitching movements in the limbs as tension is released.

so it s always a good idea to work out a few key s phrases before hand. A basic trance deepener creates a link between the idea of moving in a downward direction and going deeper into trance. limp and loose. traveling down an escalator etc. Trance deepening doesn t have to be complicated. I know a hypnotist that always do es the same basic deepener. you don t have to say every word in a certain order for it to work. So me hypnotists use numbers in lifts and have the client imagine watching the numb ers going down as the lift goes lower and lower. so that you can do something w ith it! Trance deepeners are as many and varied as trance inductions. Having a handful of phrases at the ready is also great if you can t think of what to say next. but it works. say that each number caus es them to relax even more deeply. that s good. Some common examples are walking down stairs. between each number. and the more relaxed they become the deeper i nto trance they go. link it to relaxing. Whatever you choose. For example. This deepener is very simply. How to Hypnotize Lesson Four: Deepen Trance Today we re going to focus on deepening the trance. Sleep now. try it! When you deepen a trance the . just follow a basic format and you ll be fine making it up as you go along! You can make great use of the hypnotic language patterns that you ve already learn t to assist the deepening script. Many hypnotists like to count down (and some up) as they do the deepener. going down in a lift. limp and loose. If you opt to use the staircase situation you can count a number on each step down. Remember this isn t like ca sting a spell. You ll need to describe a scene for your c lient to imagine and then talk them through the process whilst using lots of sug gestive language to deepen the trance. as it moving beyond ground floor and into the basem ent is a metaphor for moving from conscious awareness to subconscious awareness. He simply counts back from 10 to 1 very slowly and s ays the words. The lift is a great example. It gives you some time to decide what to do or how to proceed with the induction. And you ll change wh at you use to suit the circumstances (and the client). walking down a path in a forest.

take care! . Next move your hand to your chest and fe el the voice coming from there. you shift that focus inward and have the client focus on ideas and images that you present. deep trance. You can easily make up your own deepener using these notes as a guide. then your throat. Doing thi s will make you a much better hypnotist. practise everything yo u ve learned so far and see if you can link it all together smoothly without looki ng at your notes. That s pretty much all there is to a basic trance deepener. deep trance. And o f course. Until tomorrow. Do this progressively so that you get slo wer and slower as the trance deepens. the n move to your mouth. I hope you ve been especially nice to your friends and family because you re going t o need some eager volunteers very soon! As with the induction try recording a fe w deepeners and listen back. You also need to lower your tone. and with this I tell the client to ima gine they have come to a clearing. As well as ho w best to get them out! I hope you re enjoying the lessons and getting lots of pra ctise in. It s similar to having the lift go down to the base ment. aside of the words you speak. and in front of them is a door. And it s also great practise to try to pick out all of the different hypnotic language p atterns they use too. it s your only tool so look after it and train it well! A singer wouldn t dream of only using their singi ng voice on stage. a few ready made suggestions at hand for when you need a little thinki ng time. I often use the forest walk deepener too. As yo u move into the deepener. Also listen to other hypnotists and see what they do. Rest your hand on your stomach and feel you voice begin deep inside you as you practise the induct ions and deepeners. then go down to your stomach.most important thing to focus on is your voice. they practise lots! And your hypnotic voice is no different so practise using it too. and as they clamber onto it and fall asleep they can begin to dream that they are drif ting into a deep. This is your hypnotic voice. The way you speak is much much MUCH more important than the things you say! I ll be back tomorrow and we ll talk about what to do with the trance. During the trance induction process you tend to focus on the clients body. and remember to really slooooow it riiiiiiight dooo ooooown. I tell them the door leads to a special place and as we pass through it they ll go into a deep. Having a few basic ideas in your mind is usually enough. A great exercise to improve your tone quality is to practise moving your voice lower. If you read a perfect deepening script out to your client in a shrill nasal voice it s only going to agitate them . In the clearing is a very special bed. You need to really slow things down. hypnotic audio programs are a great source of inspiration. Whenever I use the staircase induction I like to finish it off by having the cli ent imagine they are standing at the bottom of the stairs. talk from your nose as you touch it. Using something similar to this enables you to move the client from a state of d eep relaxation to deep trance.

If you re with a client and this happens you can do a couple of things Some therapi sts talk them through the experience very calmly and reassure them that everythi ng is going to be alright. The alternative to dealing with it is to back away. if it s p opped up.
