Art forms in the 20th and 21st century in the US

Starting with Marcel Duchamp’s controversial appearance of the ‘Fountain’ in 1917 people started understanding that art is not only in sculptures or canvas paintings but rather it can be made of anything around us. Thus, starting the 20th century new forms of art have emerged, namely pop art, street art and body art. Pop art began in the 1960’ in the US, the term was officially introduced in 1962 at the ‘Symposium on Pop Art’ organized by the Museum of Modern Art. American Pop Art was more aggressive and bold than the British one due to the diversity of massproduced imagery. Andy Warhol is probably the most important representative figure of this movement being known as a controversial artist, whose art encompassed many forms of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film and music. He made his first artwork based on commercials, ads and comics in 1961. Before making silkscreen prints of famous personalities like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley or Elizabeth Taylor, he was painting daily objects of mass production like Coke bottles or Campbell Soup cans. Street art, also known as 3D pavement art or chalk art was introduced to America in 1987 by Wenner and Manford Stader in California. Such work implies hours of work where the artist transform the streets or sidewalks into masterpieces by used coloured chalk. Several festivals across America are organized each year where more than two hundred artists gather for a few-days street-painting action turning the squares into museum of chalk art.
