Arguments Against CETA Amount to

Wednesday , November 6 2013

An outspoken fish processor has written an open letter responding to what he calls the 'ridiculous arguments' being made on why the Canada European Trade Agreement is not a good deal for the province. VOCM's Linda Swain has more.

Bill Barry of the Barry Group of companies says while it is common for tariffs to be reduced over a period of several years as the result of trade agreements, it is 'remarkable' that virtually 100 per cent of all tariffs on fishing products will be completely eliminated once CETA comes into force. Barry says the fishing industry will also have the opportunity to sell consumer packs, which he says generally command better prices. He says it's good for the entire industry including fishermen and processors. As for concerns raised about the elimination of Minimum Processing Requirements, he's heard nothing but 'hysteria' and no concrete arguments. Barry says CETA will also benefit small companies due to less bureaucracy and clearer rules to help trade. He says Canada lives by its trade and the province needs more customers and less 'stupidity'.
