When the grasses burn,
the wildlands,
creatures flee,
to where their madness,
leads them,
fortuitous for those,
heretofore out-competed,
for a restart on the prairie,
burrowing, climbing, hopping, flying,
frantic fear rises,
from aching muscles,
lapped at by the flames,
singed by flickering ash,
in equal need of oxygen,
stolen to feed the fire,
dragon beast roars behind,
their scurry,
seek out a sheltering haven,
in the forest,
or a shed,
with paper walls of tinder,
the mice mass carpets the floor,
until they all swarm,
the same far corner,
race up the wall,
leap out the eave,
to their cauldric demise,
save for one too tired,
to scale,
he turns to face,
the fiery lips,
its molten breath licking,
his nostrils,
fighting for his tomorrow,
unaware he has become,
the last of the sweltering mice.
