Spanish verbs ‘saber’ and ‘conocer’ créate difficulties for English speakers. Both verbs usually translate into English as ‘to know’ but cannot normally be used interchangeably. Beloww is a summary ot the main uses of ‘saber’ and ‘conocer’ in Spanish. Present tense

SABER

CONOCER

’Means to know a factor’ or ‘have
information about something’.

’To be familiar or acquainted with
a person, place or thing’

¿Sabes cuál es la capital de
Ecuador? Sé hablar español ¿Sabes a qué hora empieza la película?

 Conozco Granada y Madrid.
¿Conoces a Pablo?

With expressions like:
‘Se conoce que’ (It’s well known that’) Conocer de vista (to know somebody by sight) Dar a conocer (to announce) Darse a conocer (to make oneself known)

’Having the ability’ or ‘to know
how to do something’.

¿Sabes conducir?
¿Sabes cómo arreglar la lavadora?

’To be aware or the situation or
state of a person or thing’ or ‘having knowledge or information concerning someone or something’.

¿Sabes algo de Miguel? Hace
tiempo que no lo he visto

Yo sé Tú sabes Él sabe Nosotros sabemos Vosotros sabéis Ellos saben
