Sen. Turner Reacts to Senate Vote to Eliminate Golden Week
COLUMBUS—Today, State Sen. Nina Turner (D-Cleveland) issued the following statement after the approval of Senate Bill 238 by a party-line vote in the Ohio Senate. The bill would eliminate Ohio’s Golden Week, the only period of time during which citizens can both register to vote and cast an early absentee ballot. “This bill unnecessarily reduces the amount of time that Ohioans have to cast a ballot. There is no evidence that any problems with fraud exist during this period, or that election officials have difficulty determining the registration status of these voters. If Senate Republicans wish to eliminate this voting opportunity, the burden of proof rests upon them to demonstrate the reasons why. “Voting is fundamental to our democracy, and we should be encouraging and protecting every opportunity to cast a ballot. The more convenient and secure we make it for voters, the more participation we will see.”
