The (111) planes of bcc are hexagonal layers; in this plane, the lattice vectors are [10 1] and [0 11]. The (111) planes are stacked in a pattern that repeats every three planes. N.B.: the distance between (111) planes is exaggerated by 100% to more clearly illustrate the individual planes. The second and third planes collapse towards each other; this may be considered a frozen L 2 [111] phonon. When the collapse is complete, the 3 atom unit cell is 3 formed; the two collapsed planes form the honeycomb B lattice and the remaining plane forms the A hexagonal lattice. If the transformation happens without any strains the c/a ratio for this is the ideal value of 3/8 = 0.613. 11
