to filmmaker Agnieszka Holland one of contemporary
international cinemas fascinating directors who will
receive the Festivals Life Achievement Award.
My appreciation to the Festivals artistic director Daniella

e established the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival in

W
1999, in order to pay tribute to everything that unites
us shared roots, history, and tradition. The diverse
worldviews expressed in the Festivals films remind
us that Judaism is not only religion, but also culture,
narrative, and shared historical memory. This year
the Festival includes over 50 wonderful, eye-opening,
and inspiring films from Israel and abroad. Films that
contain moments of pain, sadness, and suffering
alongisde many moments of joy, love, happiness, and
excitement.
A big hug to the wonderful filmmaker Agnieszka
Holland, the Festivals guest of honor, who will be
awarded this years Life Achievement Award.
In a season in which the days are getting shorter and
darker, we invite you to join us for a celebration of light.
Every evening the screen will light up, and perhaps the
magic of the cinema will finally be able to bring with it
the spirit of tolerance, listening, and peace.
A great thanks to the Cinematheque staff for their
devotion and creativity.

LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

TO AGNIESZKA HOLLAND

Throughout a prolific career spanning

more than four decades, Agnieszka
Holland has proven the cinemas ability to deal with
fundamental human questions through dramatic
means. Born in Warsaw in 1945, she studied at the
Prague Film School during the heyday of Czech cinema
and the Prague Spring (during which she spent six
weeks in prison for participating in demonstrations) and
began her cinematic career during the 1970s, working on
the films of Krzysztof Zanussi and Andrzej Wajda. The
latter would become her mentor, teaching her the basic
tenet that every film must convey a certain message.
She perfected this message in the scripts she wrote and
the films she would direct later on. Her criticism of the
communist regime, expressed in her films Screen Tests
(1977), Fever (1981), and A Lonely Woman (1981), led her
into exile in Paris during the 1980s. In these years she
continued to write for her colleagues who were still
active in Poland, and also to direct. In 1985, her film
Angry Harvest was selected as Germanys nominee
for the Best Foreign Film Oscar, opening the way for
another branch of her career, this time in the United
States. Since then she has hopped freely between the
continents, and in the give-and-take between American

and European cinema, she continues

to deal with basic questions of faith,
love, and morality, for example, in To Kill a Priest (1988)
and Europa Europa (1990; perhaps her most famous film,
about a Jewish boy in Nazi Germany who survives the
Holocaust by passing as an Aryan and joining the Hitler
Youth), in Washington Square (1997), The Third Miracle
(1997), Julie Walking Home (2002), or In Darkness
(2011). In between all this, she has also found the time
to direct episodes for the quality TV series The Wire
and Treme. In all of these, Holland demonstrates her
phenomenal ability to present an elegant cinema with
a solid narrative structure, which strives, as she learned
from Wajda, to convey a certain message. For Holland
this message most often touches upon the essence of
human existence, as she once put it in simple terms
in an interview with Michael Handelzalts: What is a
good man? Her films are therefore an emotional and
conscientious confrontation that takes place on the
screen, and as in all great art, reaches us, the viewers,
and challenges our hearts and minds. For all this, we
are proud to award Agnieszka Holland this years Life
Achievement Award.

Down and out in the big city, thiry-something Arafat

Sulliman is trying to shake his addiction to porn
magazines while also escaping his parents attempts to
set him up with Palestinian girls. After another spree
of debauchery in Manhattan, he decides to marry a
new girl an Israeli testing the limits of his parents
tolerance.
This is the second film by Ghazi Albuliwi, the Jordanianborn Brooklyn-raised writer-director-actor who was
chosen a decade ago by Filmmaker Magazine as one
of the promising voices of American independent
cinema. He wrote the script for Peace after Marriage
while on vacation in Jerusalem, and the film completed
thanks to the Creative Promise Award at Tribeca.
Ghazi cast himself in the lead role, alongside Hiam
Abbas (The Lemon Tree) in a rare comic role, Egyptian
actor Hany Kamel, and Israeli-Americans Omer Barnea,
Einat Tubi, and Assaf Cohen. The result: a new Middle
East, wild and uninhibited, or, if you will a Palestinian
Seinfeld on steroids.

The Documentary Trilogy - The 81st Blow, Flames in

the Ashes and The Last Sea - was produced by the
Ghetto Fighters House Museum in 1972-1985. The
testimonies of the people themselves, both victims
and perpetrators, are heard on top of authentic black
and white footage, thus creating a narrative that turns
the viewer into an active participant. Over the years,
the films creators Haim Gouri, Jacques Ehrlich, and
composer Yossi Mar-Haim took upon themselves to
renew and update the trilogy. The Israel Film Archive
Jerusalem Cinematheque enthusiastically undertook
the mission of restoring and preserving the films.
Flames in the Ashes (1985) - The film tells the story of
Jewish resistance in Nazi-occupied Europe. Outraged
by the stereotypical image of the Jews going like sheep
to the slaughter, the film tells about the different kinds of
resistance, up to the loneliest and most desperate
uprising that the rebel ever knew (winner of the 1990
Ka-Tzetnik Award).

In recent years we have witnessed a phenomenon of

spiritual awaking that has touched all walks of JewishIsraeli society. This awakening, which in the past was
characterized by an insular and unequivocal process
of repentance, has stripped itself of its old clothing
and taken on a new form, which can be described as
reconnecting with the Jewish sources.
Returning Forward, investigates this phenomenon
through the perspectives and life paths of famous
artists. We go on a journey in their footsteps on the
way to the light that is concealed in the sources.

the conversion process, obligates the women to immerse
in the presence of three rabbinic judges while wearing

experience from the women converts' viewpoint, an
experience which may simultaneously evoke feelings
of both elation and humiliation. The work exposes the

Diane von Furstenberg, Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani,

Marc Jacobs, Alber Elbaz, Manolo Blahnik, are among
the many stars who appear in this stylish and electrifying
tribute to Bergdorf Goodman - the most mythic of
American fashion emporiums. Founded in 1899 by
Herman Bergdorf, this beloved luxury goods department
store on Fifth Avenue, New York, has been featured in
several films. Now, audiences have a rare chance to
peek into the fascinating inner workings from Bergdorf
Goodmans iconic history. The fashion, the windows,
the buyers, the shoppers, and of course, the workforce,
all come to life in an equally supreme. Matthew Miele
explores not just the glamour, but the passion behind
the daily creation of this luxury mecca in a film that is
as dynamic, lush, and intimate as the store itself.

During WWII, a Polish-Catholic farmer finds a wounded

Jewish woman in the forest near his house. He decides
to save her, but what begins as a humane and heroic act,
gradually transforms into an emotionally and sexually
exploitative relationship. The lonely middle-aged man
cannot stand the temptation of having a beautiful
woman in his house. He not only exploits her sexually,
but forces her to convert. Meanwhile, the woman,
who does not know what has become of her family
and alternates between moments of desperation and
hope, clutches desperately to the few signs of humanity
shown by the man on whom her life depends.

This cinematic adaptation of the colossal literary work,

written by the Swiss Jew Albert Cohen and published in
1968, is set in Switzerland in the mid-1930s, and describes
a man and a woman trying to overcome prejudices and
differences to build for themselves a private, protected,
almost illusory world. Jonathan Rhys Meyers and the
beautiful Natalia Vodianova in the lead roles sprinkle
star dust on the period melodrama.

Buenos Aires, the late 1950s. Teenager Shulamit meets

her neighbor, Friedrich. Shulamit is the daughter of
Jews who fled Germany in the wake of WWII; Friedrich

Life of the Jews in Palestine: 1913 is an extraordinary look at

the pioneers of the First and Second Aliyah in Palestine.
The film was made by Noah Sokolovsky and the HaMizrah
Society Production Company from Odessa, towards the
11th Zionist Congress in Vienna. Shooting took place in
the spring of 1913 and documented the new and the old
Jewish Yishuv in and around Jerusalem, on the coastal
plain, and in the Galilee. The film was screened with
much success in Europe on the eve of the First World
War, but disappeared without a trace after the war. The
lost film was discovered by chance in Paris in 1997, in
an original nitrate negative in the archive of the Centre
National de la Cinmatographie in France. The original
preservation and restoration work was done by the CNC,
in partnership with the Israel Film Archive-Jerusalem
Cinematheque.
In honor of the centenary celebrations of the films
production, the Israel Film Archive-Jerusalem
Cinematheque has produced a new digital copy of
the film with improved image. The film was scanned
by Shai Drori using the most innovative technologies
available today.

Over the course of four decades, director Abbey Neidik

has documented the women of the Hasidic community
in a town near Montreal. With free access to the
teachers' seminar, and the Hasidic young women's
surprising openness, a complex and moving picture
emerges - a portrait of strong believers, for whom
marriage is written in the heavens, the Torah is a
guide to daily life, and kosher sex arouses happiness
and meaning. Their point of view reveals a confident,
generous, and liberated femininity, which succeeds in
maintaining relations of tolerance and openness.

nature of deformity.
When One of Us premiered in 1999 in Berlin, I sensed
my deceased mother in the audience and felt like a liar.
Im not the person you see on the screen, I told the audience [...]. Since then, Ive learnt there is no resolution,
just more understanding (Susan Korda).

When most countries turned a blind eye to the

atrocities being committed by the Nazi regime, Gilbert
and Eleanor Kraus, a Jewish couple from Philadelphia,
decided to take action and went to the heart of Nazi
Germany in 1939 to try to save Jewish children. On June
3, 1939, 50 children arrived in New York, and were sent to
live with relatives or adoptive families. Following them,
the Krauses managed to procure visas and for some of
the childrens parents. The Krauses returned to their
ordinary life in and hardly spoke about the daring and
successful rescue mission.

Featuring chefs Sherry Ansky, Ezra Kedem, Eran

On the corner of Jerusalem's King George and

HaHistadrut streets, stands a building that houses
two of the oldest and most famous restaurants in the
city - Pinati, Israels infamous humus joints, and Fink,
the legendary European-Jekke cuisine bar-restaurant.
In between the two establishments is Galinas lottery
stand. Each place is a world unto itself, and despite
the many years of working side by side, the only things
they share are gas balloons, a wall, and the exhaust of
passing buses.

Jerusalem, Palestine, 1936: Jewish immigrants from

Germany open up the Taamon Caf on King George
Street. In 1950, the Israeli parliament is housed in a
building across the street, and Taamon becomes
the caf of choice for many national leaders and
parties from right and left, who argued about politics.
The film looks at everyday life in the caf, alongside
interviews with members of the political movements,
who bring to life the stories from the 1960s and 70s

The story of foreign workers in Israel as seen through

the eyes of five Filipino families whose children risk
deportation. Transit, the Philippines submission for
Best Foreign Film at the Oscars, brings to the screen the
identity conflicts of those who were born far from their
parents homeland and who fear being torn from the
language and society they knew all their lives. Hannah
Espias debut film caused an uproar in the Philippines,
where the national economy depends greatly on the
millions of migrant workers who earn money overseas.
