Customs of the ANE
• Genesis 24:4. “But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.”
 Kinship marriage.  Arranged marriage.  Oath-taking.

Oaths in the ANE
“The oath is the one thing that is most sacred and inviolable among the desert people and their descendants…. But not every oath will do. To be most binding and solemn an oath should be by the life of something, even if it be but a blade of grass. The only oath more awful than that „by my life‟ or (less commonly) „by the life of my head‟ is…„by the life of God‟ or „as the Lord liveth‟…. Anciently it was an awful thing, as it still is among the desert people.” —Hugh Nibley, An Approach to the Book of Mormon, 128–29

Customs of the ANE
• Genesis 24:16. “A virgin, neither had any man known her.”
 “Virgin” = ‫( בתולה‬bethuwlah)= a young woman of marriageable age.

• Genesis 24:22, 53. Gifts for Rebekah:
 Gold nose ring, about 2/5 of an ounce (beka).  Two gold bracelets, about 4 ounces (ten shekels).  Gold, silver, clothing = bride-price.

• Genesis 24:65. Bridal veil.

“Reddish” = ‫’(אדמוני‬admoni), sounds like Edomite. “Hairy” = ‫(שצר‬se’ar), sounds like Mount Seir, home of the Edomites.

Jacob ‫’( צקב‬aqev), “may he protect”
(as a rearguard).
