Literary terminology. devices

1.Apposition: an added explanation or remark. We put them between commas. Example without apposition: "Mr. Holloway assigned some homework today." Example with apposition: "Mr. Holloway, possibly the smartest man in the universe, assigned some homework today." 2.Assonance: repetition of vowel sounds. A specific type of alliteration. 3.Asyndeton: a construction without conjunctions. Remember last week's paratactic sentence? A paratactic sentence is one that uses asyndeton. 4.Polysyndeton: lots of conjunctions, possibly too many conjunctions. "I went to school, and I went to work after school, and I went home after that, and I went to bed." 5.Pun: a humorous use of words that sound almost alike but have different meanings, or of words that have multiple meanings. 6.Synecdoche: to use a part of a thing to represent the whole thing. To use "wheels" to mean car, to use "threads" to mean clothes. To use "benjamins" to mean money.

7.Hoi polloi the common people; the masses (often preceded by the). 8.Sentient- having the power of perception by the senses; conscious. 9.Impinge- to make an impression; have an effect or impact (usually fol. byon or upon): to impinge upon the imagination; social pressures that impinge upon one's daily life. 10.Cataract- a descent of water over a steep surface; a waterfall, esp. one of considerable size. 11.Animosity- a feeling of strong dislike, ill will, or enmity that tends to display itself in action: a deep-seated animosity between two sisters; animosity against one's neighbor. 12.Bombast- speech too pompous for an occasion; pretentious words. 13.Orthography- the art of writing words with the proper letters, according to accepted usage; correct spelling. 14.Paleontology- the science of the forms of life existing in former geologic periods, as represented by their fossils. 15.Recoil- to draw back; start or shrink back, as in alarm, horror, or disgust.
