As educators we want the best for all students, and it goes without saying that our parents want the same. Teachers spend time developing curriculum for our struggling learners, scaffolding instruction, making modifications and accommodations, but what about our students on the other end of the spectrum? Are we spending equal time meeting the needs of our highly able students? Are we providing these students with learning opportunities demanding depth and complexity? How can educators meet the diverse needs of the classroom? This newsletter will: • Pose questions to our PHS community in hopes to solicit responses and strategies that are already in use in our classrooms. • Provide facts and resources to meet the needs of Gifted and Talented education.. • Links for differentiation ideas. practical classroom

Question: Is there currently a GATE program within PUSD?
Survey reveals 69% of PUSD teachers are unsure of whether or not there is a program in our district. There is no GATE program in PUSD. Instead, the expectation is that needs of our gifted and talented population are to be met through differentiated instruction in every classroom. Simply, it is no secret that our Paradise classrooms provide challenges due to their diverse population. As educators, we are busy trying our best to meet these needs, and our parents are busy in trying to make sure we do what’s best for their children. It is my hope that this publication will provide, without a lot of extra time, a means to share ideas, questions, as well as heighten awareness of how best to meet the needs of a sometimes overlooked population: the gifted and talented student.

Myths surrounding Gifted and Talented Education

Dispelling Myths
As cited by NAGC, Kulik (1992) states, “Achievement is increased when gifted and talented students are grouped together for enriched or accelerated learning. Ability grouping without curricular acceleration or enrichment produces little or no differences in student achievement. Bright, average, and struggling students all benefit from being grouped with others in their ability/instructional groups when the curriculum is adjusted to the aptitude levels of the group. When gifted students are grouped together and receive advanced enrichment or acceleration, they benefit the most because they outperform control group students who are not grouped and do not receive enrichment or acceleration by five months to a full year on achievement tests.”
