Book Boost Win

for King Arthur’s Community School
Irene Chant went ‘off curriculum’ on a recent shopping spree, filling her trolley with mystical dungeons, dragons and demons, vroom vroom fast cars and superbikes, a bundle of fiction for a good read and became starry-eyed over the New Astronomer. Irene, Librarian of King Arthur’s Community School in Wincanton, Somerset was delighted that the School Finance Manager, Thelma Speed was the winner of the £500 book voucher draw incorporated in the 3M Library Systems’ 2004 mailer to all UK schools. “The mail shot provided the opportunity to request information on 3M’s Detection Systems,” explained Thelma. “I never considered that I might be the lucky winner, it was a welcome surprise. The whole school is delighted with the additional books. Thank you Irene added: “I was able to include books that we could not justify on normal budgets. The win enabled me to be a little frivolous, too, which the children love and which helps to demonstrate different styles and methodology from a wide range of authors and subjects. “We are a ‘big read’ school with very keen bookworms in our Book Club,” said Irene. We canvassed Club members to identify what they and their friends liked to read and of course it is inspiring for the students to see brand new books in the library. Interestingly, one of the most popular new titles is the Guinness Book of Records.”
