Lecture 1: Who are the learners?

Who are the learners?


For a teacher to facilitate learning effectively in the classroom, he or she must have a clear knowledge of who learners are
Generally, a learner may refer to any person who engages in the processes of acquiring new knowledge and/or developing new skill A learner may be found wherever there is a learning relationship between two persons or among a group of persons

In the school context, learners may refer to children in a primary, middle or secondary school. It involves pupils or students whose primary responsibility is to learn

Why should you know your learners?


Knowing who learners are, and understanding their nature, helps you to:

Appreciate the physical, emotional, social and intellectual differences that affect individual learners behaviour in school Plan your lessons to meet the needs of learners Provide support for pupils/students learning processes

The Nature of Learners


No two learners are the same. They differ in terms of:
Social orientation Emotional orientation Intellectual orientation Physical conditions
Learners have the same inherent value as teachers: their dignity should be respected

The nature of learners


LEARNERS
have their own opinions and views of the world which ought to be respected learn best in a non-threatening environment appreciate and rise to challenging tasks

Challenges for learners and learning


Dealing with cultural restrictions to learners voices Difficulties in accessing learning materials Threat and punishment Unfairness and inequality Interferences with other duties and obligations Language barriers

Discuss with your colleagues how they view the concept learner Discuss with your colleagues what you consider to be the similarities and differences between a teacher and a learner Read some of the articles that are in the extended reading list Make your own list of actions that students could take to make their roles as learners more beneficial to themselves
