SEMIOTICS OF EDUCATIONAL

INSTITUTIONS AND THEIR LOGOS

GROUP 8
AN INTRODUCTION
• The education sector in India has for a long time
signified the transition from darkness to light –
bringing knowledge and value to millions of students
• The Langue identified in all the logos is education
and knowledge to bring one out of darkness into a
new world of light (Logos of older institutes such as
IIM A, B, etc.)
• The Parole represents the evolution of the logos
with the development in the education sector. Logos
of institutes such as MICA have a very different logo
representing the character of the institute yet convey
the same basic message in an unconventional
manner.

IIM - Ahmedabad
Sidi Sayyid Jaali is a 15th century mosque renowned for its Islamic
architecture of mesh work.

The logo of IIM-A appears to be adapted from this mosque (the palm tree
mesh (jaali) work of the mosque) , probably because the mosque is widely
accepted as a symbol of Ahmedabad itself.

The Jhali screens of the Sidi Sayed Mosque are engraved from a single
piece of rock which is quite exceptional.

The mosque is named after Sidi Sayyid, a slave of Ahmed Shah.

The uniqueness of the architecture is the mesh work, which allows the
sunlight and air to pass through, and it is designed in such a way that
insiders can see the outside world, whereas the outsiders can’t see what is
happening inside.
