Path Profile
Documentation

General
SQ-Path is a Spreadsheet that provides a quick representation of a radio path. This revision
adds calculations that automatically gives the user latitude & longitude values for 20 equidistant
points between Site-A and Site-B. This allows the user to find this point accurately in software
such as TopoUSA with a simple search. The elevation for that point is then available via
software rather than working with topographic maps.
Instructions
Enter data for sites A and B. The required fields to get started are the site latitudes/longitudes,
the site elevations, and the antenna heights. This information is placed in the appropriate cell
for each site. Cells are protected so the spreadsheet won't let you miss the field.
Default values for k-factor, average foliage height, and frequency are in place just under the
Site-B block. Adjust these values if necessary. Note that heights and elevations are in feet
and frequency is in GHz. You must use these units.
Below the path graph you will see a listing of the data points. Data point 1 is Site-A and data
point 22 is Site-B. Data points 2 through 21 are the twenty equidistant data points. The user
must change the elevations to actual data for each of these twenty data points. Note again
that the lat/lon is given for each data point to make life easier. The point elevation should be
picked to reflect the highest object close, (within Fresnel clearance), to the point's lat/lon
coordinates. In other words and for example, if you see a ridge squarely between two data
points on the map, use the ridge elevation as one or both of the data point elevations.
There is one additional place where optional user input is allowed. This is below the printed
page in a table of calculated values. The unshaded area is for user input. There is an
example here for a 180 foot point adder that might represent a tower or a building in the path.
This example data should be deleted for your calculation.
Notes
If the user has a decimal value for the site lat/lon minutes, it can be placed in the "minutes"
field as a decimal value. GPS equipment typically gives coordinates in degrees plus a decimal
minute value. If this is the case, be sure to set the "seconds" field to zero. The same would
apply to a decimal degree value; just be sure to zero the minutes and the seconds in this case.
With regard to coordinate systems, be consistent and don't mix NAD 27 and 83 data in the
same sheet.
For a complete path analysis of unlicensed spread spectrum hops, use the department's path
analysis spreadsheet or commercial software. For licensed hops, use commercial software
only. Never rely solely on commercial software digital elevation data without checking actual
topo maps and/or doing a site survey.
