SAINT NICHOLAS - SANTA CLAUS - SAN NICOLS

The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara. At the time the area was Greek and is now on the Southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to the those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships. La verdadera historia de Santa Claus comienza con Nicols, que naci en el siglo III en el pueblo de Patara. En ese momento el rea era griego pero ahora est en la costa sur de Turqua. Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians, Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned. The prisons were so full of bishops, priests, and deacons, there was no room for the real criminalsmurderers, thieves and robbers. After his release, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicaea, in AD 325. He died December 6, AD 343 in Myra and was buried in his cathedral church. Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told of Saint Nicholas' life and deeds. These accounts help us understand his extraordinary character and why he is so beloved and revered as protector and helper of those in need. One story tells of a poor man with three daughters. In those days a young woman's father had to offer prospective husbands something of valuea dowry. The larger the dowry, the better the chance that a young woman would find a good husband. Without a dowry, a woman was unlikely to marry. This poor man's daughters, without dowries, were therefore destined to be sold into slavery. Mysteriously, on three different occasions, a bag of gold appeared in their home, providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in stockings or shoes left before the fire to dry. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas. And so, Saint Nicholas is a gift-giver. One of the oldest stories showing Saint Nicholas as a protector of children takes place long after his death. The townspeople of Myra were celebrating the good saint on the eve of his feast day when a band of Arab pirates from Crete came into the district. They stole treasures from the Church of Saint Nicholas to take away as booty. As they were leaving town, they snatched a young boy, Basilios, to make into a slave. The emir, or ruler, selected Basilios to be his personal cupbearer. Not knowing the language, Basilios would not understand what the king said to those around him. So, for the next year Basilios waited on the king, bringing his wine in a beautiful golden cup. For Basilios' parents, devastated at the loss of their only child, the year passed slowly, filled with grief. As the next Saint Nicholas' feast day approached, Basilios' mother would not join in the festivity, as it was now a day of tragedy. However, she was persuaded to have a simple observance at homewith quiet prayers for Basilios' safekeeping. Meanwhile, as Basilios was fulfilling his tasks serving the emir, he was suddenly whisked up and away. Saint Nicholas appeared to the terrified boy, blessed him, and set him down at his home back in Myra. Imagine the joy and wonderment when Basilios amazingly appeared before his parents, still holding the king's golden cup. This is the first story told of Saint Nicholas protecting children which became his primary role in the West. In France the story is told of three small children, wandering in their play until lost, lured, and captured and killed by an evil butcher. Saint Nicholas appears and appeals to God to return them to life and to their families (The statue at the back of our Chapel show Saint Nicholas with three children in a basket, they represent this story). Other stories, as well, tell of children who disappeared, were kidnapped, fell into a well, or suffered some other disaster, all to be delivered through the good auspices of Saint Nicholas. These accounts of a child forcibly taken from parents, followed by a time of grieving and despair, then the miraculous return of the child, have profound and universal appeal which makes Nicholas the much valued Guardian of Children. It is no wonder he is the beloved protector and patron saint of children. Another legend says: When all the bishops were gathered together in Nicaea to decide the great question threatening to split the early church, there were many long speeches. Such meetings can be very tiring. It looked as if Bishop Nicholas had dozed off, weary and unable to stay awake. As he slept, Nicholas heard voices calling his name, and, leaving his sleeping body leaning on the table, his soul followed the voices. After traveling a long way, he came to a place in the middle of the sea. A mighty storm raged, putting a ship in great danger. The sails were shredded and the masts were broken as if they were toothpicks. Sailors, clinging to the ship, cried to Nicholas for help. Nicholas raised his hands, the waves calmed and thunder and lightening stopped. The sun came out over a sea once again calm. The grateful sailors thanked God for their rescue. Nicholas blessed the sailors and, returned. He did many kind and generous deeds in secret, expecting nothing in return!

2013 RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Soon, our parishes will be conducting the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious (RFR). I urge you to join with me in offering this appeal your prayerful and vocal support. Your efforts are vital to its success. Catholic bishops of the United States initiated the RFR in 1988 to address the profound lack of retirement funding among religious communities. Despite ongoing generosity to the annual collection, numerous communities continue to struggle to provide adequate care for their senior members. Financial distributions from the RFR offer supplemental support for bolstering retirement savings and for meeting such day-to-day needs as prescription medications and nursing care. Many of us may recall a sister, brother, or religious order priest whose life and witness had a profound impact on our own vocation. In thanksgiving for this personand for the many contributions senior women and men religious have made to our Church and worldI ask for your assistance. As St. Paul reminds us, So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all, but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith (Gal 6:10). God bless you,

Christmas Eve Family Mass

Want to add something to your familys Christmas Eve traditions? Looking to put more Christ in Christmas for your children? Here is a wonderful opportunity. Participate in our . . . Annual Christmas Eve Family Mass Children ages 4 to 10 reenact the Christmas Gospel, complete with animals, angels and shepherds. And teens & tweens are our lectors. This all happens during the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass in Church. Interested? Auditions are on Saturday, December 7th at 10:30 a.m. in the Church. Practices continue on December 14th , and dress rehearsal is on the 21st . All are at 10:30 a.m. in the Church and last one hour. Costumes are required, but there are lots to borrow and simple, no-sew ideas are provided. Your memories will last a lifetime.

WHEN YOU HAVE A CAR TO DONATE, YOU AUTO THINK St. Vincent de Paul! When you hear those radio ads encouraging the donation of your used car, please keep in mind that your car will most likely NOT be given to someone who can use it. Such cars are usually sold at auction or dismantled for the resale of their parts. That may serve the profit-purposes of a charitable organization. Yet its not very practical for people who have serious transportation needs, but cant afford to buy a car. On the other hand, when you donate your car to St. Vincent de Paul, once we have determined that it is safe and functional, we put it directly into the hands of a needy person or family so it can be used to drive to work, to go on family errands, or to meet the many other practical needs for getting around. We have no paper-work complications. And we have no large management salaries or administrative costs to pay. We simply serve the needy. So when youre ready to surrender your car, keep St. Vincent de Paul first on your list of options. Call 630-293-9755. Well pick up the car and get it into the hands of someone who can really use it.

The Wish Trees are Up!

As in years past, there will be a variety of tags on the trees to choose from. Please look closely at the date on the tags; each organization has a different deadline. In order that small items do not get lost, do not place gift cards under the trees. Instead, turn these in at the parish office. Those groups or individuals who would like to volunteer to bring the gifts after Mass downstairs to the storage room in Sebahar Hall can contact Karen Tsaparis at 630-917-0565 or email. karen.tsaparis@gmail.com. St. Vincent de Paul Donation Drive @ St. John the Baptist Saturday, December 7 & December 8
The St. Vincent de Paul truck will be in our parking lot the weekend of December 7 & 8. Our volunteers will be waiting for you at the truck to help you unload. Please have all your donations bagged or boxed. No hangers, please. We will accept: Clothing, shoes, linens & books in good or bad condition. Unusable clothing, shoes, linens & even books generate income for the needy because they are sold for rags or in bulk. THERE IS A SPECIAL NEED FOR COATS & OTHER WINTER CLOTHING. Small housewares (toasters, blenders, mixers, etc.) Electronics! SVDP Thrift shops are now electronic recycling centers! We can take small electronics & computers at clothing drives. For larger item donations, please call for a home pick-up. ONLY FLAT SCREEN TVS ACCEPTED. No console TVs or large TVs. Your donations go to the SVDP Thrift Shops where much of our donations are given away free to needy families in the community. Some are sold at reasonable prices at the thrift shops so that needy families can shop with dignity. Proceeds from the thrift shops go into a general assistance fund from which St. Vincent de Paul Conferences at the church level help folks with rent, mortgage or utility assistance. If you have any large items, bicycles or furniture you would like to donate, you can call 630-231-4658 to schedule a pickup at your home. Here are just a few of the offerings to God from the youths of St. Johns; Courtney, Alexa, Emily, Julia, Ana, Brady, Melanie, Dayanara, Dora, Jenny, Jahiro, Ailish, Kailey, Norby, Ryan, Brody, Keira, Alyssa, Zachary, Jack, Suyapa & Avaall donated money to the church this week. Ava was in a concert. Keira helped an injured friend by carrying their books. Kailey helped a friend do geography homework. Ailish gave her dad a birthday present. Brady helped someone get onto the computer at school. Alexa gave her dad a birthday present. Ana is thankful for a family together all the time. Talents of St. Johns youths are: singing in a choir, basketball, baking a birthday cake, playing the violin, math and Irish dancing. Our priests are available to make hospital visits. Because of HIPAA Laws the Hospital does not notify churches when parishioners are there.
