Species for Overseeding of Greens

The following species have been used to overseed Bermuda greens with Tifgreen, Tifdwarf or other Bermuda cultivars: Domestic Ryegrass, Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenne) -- preferably Pelo or NK-100 selections, Creeping Red Fescue (Festuca rubra), Pennlawn Fescue (a Festuca cultivar), Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis), Seaside Bentgrass -- a cultivar of Creeping Bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) and Rough Bluegrass (Poa Trivialis). Precede planting by mowing the greens close - 1/8 in. Uniformly overseed with Option 1: 18 to 22 Kg. of domestic ryegrass, per 1,000 square feet. Option 2: 13 to 18 of perennial ryegrass, per 1,000 square feet. Option 3: A mixture of 7 Kg. of creeping red fescue, 1.5 Kg. of Kentucky bluegrass, and 500 gm. of Seaside bent, per 1000 square feet. Option 4: 7 Kg. of Pennlawn fescue and 2 Kg. of Poa trivialis, per 1,000 square feet. Option 5: 3 Kg. of Poa trivialis and 1 Kg. of Seaside bent, per 1,000 square feet Option 6: 2 Kg. Poa trivialis, 4 kg. Pennlawn fescue, 1 Kg. Kentucky bluegrass, and 500 gm. of Seaside bent, per 1,000 square feet. Option 7: 6 to 7 Kg. of Poa trivialis seed, per 1000 square feet. Drag seed into turf with a steel door mat. Apply and drag in 3/4 cu. Yd. of good sterilized loamy sand or other topdressing material per 1000 sq ft to cover the seed and water frequently. Maintain with regular mowing, watering, topdressing, and fertilizing. Note: Ryegrass is the easiest and quickest to establish, and in most cases is the most economical. It tolerates heavy traffic as well as or better than any of the other grasses indicated above. As CGC has heavy play even in the winters, some 'ryegrass is essential. By adding 1.5 to 2 Kg. of Poa trivialis to 18 Kg. of rye per 1,000 square feet, you will get a little faster putting surface than that provided by ryegrass alone. Poa trivialis has a pleasing color, tolerates extremely low temperatures, performs well in combination with all the other grasses indicated above, and helps to mask the everpresent Poa annua. Any available cultivar of Creeping Bentgrass, Red or Chewings Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass can be used. Your choice will depend upon the availability of one or more types of seed in India.
