 Hermann Hesse: A Chronology of His Life and Works

1877 Born on July 2, in the town of Calw, Germany.

1890 Hesse, aged 13, reads the poem "Die Nacht" by Hölderlin, and resolves at
all costs to become a poet.
1895 Begins working in a bookstore, where he reads Goethe and the German
Romantics, especially Novalis.
1896 Hesse is published for the first time: his poems appear in a magazine in
Vienna.
1899 Two books published, a book of poems ("Romantic Songs") and prose (An
Hour After Midnight).
1904 Peter Camenzind, Hesse's first novel, brings him immediate fame and
financial independence. Marries Maria Bernoulli, who is 9 years older
than Hesse. Moves to the German Shore of Lake Constance.
1906 Beneath the Wheel (novel).
1910 Gertrude (novel).
1911 Travels to southeast Asia -- Ceylon, Malaya, Sumatra with his friend, the
painter Hans Sturzenegger. After bouts of dysentery and discouragement
from the living conditions and pseudo-spirituality, Hesse returns home
before reaching his ultimate destination, India. After the trip he writes
an autobiographical essay "Pidurutalagala" about a revelation on the
highest summit of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).
1914 Germany declares war on Russia and France, and then invades Belgium.
Rosshalde (novel) reflects Hesse's troubled marriage. Hesse's pacifist
writings over the next years lead to the decline in his literary popularity,
and financial troubles in the early 1920s.
1915 Knulp (novel).
1916 Death of his father. Wife enters mental hospital. In April (and until
November of the next year) Hesse himself becomes a patient of
psychoanalysis with a disciple of Carl Jung, Dr. J. B. Lang. Hesse writes
the autobiographical essay: "Remembrance of India".

1919 Demian (novel) written in 4 weeks. Writes, about the year 1919, "my last
high point ... the fullest, most exuberant, most industrious and most
glowing year of my life." Begins writing Siddartha.
1920 Klingsor's Last Summer (novel). In Zarathustra's Return (non-fiction),
Hesse asks German youth to abandon the false gods of greed and
war-mongering.
1922 Siddartha (novel). The book's title is a Sanskrit word that means: "he who
has achieved his aim". In this year and the next one, inflation in
Germany makes Hesse's income from royalties almost worthless, and he
struggles to make a living by borrowing from friends, and selling his book
Piktor's Metamorphosis, each book illustrated with different watercolors
painted by Hesse.
1923 Becomes a citizen of Switzerland. Divorce from Maria Bernoulli.
1924 Marries Ruth Wegner, who is half his age. The official divorce comes
three years later, but the actual marriage lasts approximately three
months.
1926 Upset by his failed marriage, for about six months Hesse visits dance
halls in Zurich, seeking distraction and forgetting in sex, jazz, and
alcohol.
1927 Steppenwolf (novel).
1930 Narcissus and Goldmund (novel).
1931 Marries Ninon Dolbin and then moves to Montagnola, Switzerland. Begins
writing The Glass Bead Game, a utopian novel set in the year 2400,
which he will work on for the next 11 years.
1932 Journey to the East (novel).
1943 The Glass Bead Game [Magister Ludi] (novel). For the next 18 years,
Hesse will write essays, letters, short fiction and reviews.
1946 Awarded both the Goethe-Preis and the Nobel Prize for Literature.
1962 August 9. At age 85, Hesse -- from a hemorrhage in his brain caused by
leukemia -- dies in his sleep.

gehaucht, aus den Lehren der alten
Brahmanen geträufelt.

of joy for himself, he found no
delight in himself. Walking the rosy
paths of the fig tree garden, sitting
in the bluish shade of the grove of
contemplation, washing his limbs
daily in the bath of repentance,
sacrificing in the dim shade of the
mango forest, his gestures of
perfect decency, everyone’s love
and joy, he still lacked all joy in his
heart. Dreams and restless thoughts
came into his mind, flowing from
the water of the river, sparkling
from the stars of the night, melting
from the beams of the sun, dreams
came to him and a restlessness of
the soul, fuming from the sacrifices,
breathing forth from the verses of
the Rig-Veda, being infused into
him, drop by drop, from the
teachings of the old Brahmans.

senses, the acts of the gods, they
knew infinitely much—but was it
valuable to know all of this, not
knowing that one and only thing, the
most important thing, the solely
important thing?

else was searching, was a detour,
was getting lost.
So waren Siddharthas Gedanken, dies war Thus were Siddhartha’s thoughts,
sein Durst, dies sein Leiden. this was his thirst, this was his
suffering.

“Truly, the name of the Brahman is
satyam—verily, he who knows such a
thing, will enter the heavenly world
every day.” Often, it seemed near,
the heavenly world, but never he
had reached it completely, never he
had quenched the ultimate thirst.
And among all the wise and wisest
men, he knew and whose
instructions he had received, among
all of them there was no one, who
had reached it completely, the
heavenly world, who had quenched
it completely, the eternal thirst.

Govinda: “Morgen in der Frühe, mein
Freund, wird Siddhartha zu den Samanas

Alsbald und beim ersten Blick erkannte
Govinda: Nun beginnt es, nun geht
Siddhartha seinen Weg, nun beginnt sein
Schicksal zu sprossen, und mit seinem das

trockene Bananenschale.
“O Siddhartha,” rief er, “wird das dein
Vater dir erlauben?”
Siddhartha blickte herüber wie ein

these words and read the decision in
the motionless face of his friend,
unstoppable like the arrow shot
from the bow. Soon and with the
first glance, Govinda realized: Now
it is beginning, now Siddhartha is
taking his own way, now his fate is
beginning to sprout, and with his,
my own. And he turned pale like a
dry banana-skin.
“O Siddhartha,” he exclaimed, “will
your father permit you to do that?”
Siddhartha looked over as if he was
just waking up. Arrow-fast he read
in Govinda´s soul, read the fear,
read the submission.
“O Govinda,” sprach er leise, “wir wollen
nicht Worte verschwenden. Morgen mit
Tagesanbruch werde ich das Leben der
Samanas beginnen. Rede nicht mehr
davon.”
Siddhartha trat in die Kammer, wo sein
Vater auf einer Matte aus Bast saß, und
trat hinter seinen Vater und blieb da
stehen, bis sein Vater fühlte, daß einer
hinter ihm stehe. Sprach der Brahmane:
“Bist du es, Siddhartha? So sage, was zu
sagen du gekommen bist.”
Sprach Siddhartha: “Mit deiner Erlaubnis,
mein Vater. Ich bin gekommen, dir zu
sagen, daß mich verlangt, morgen dein
Haus zu verlassen und zu den Asketen zu
gehen. Ein Samana zu werden ist mein
Verlangen. Möge mein Vater dem nicht
entgegen sein.”
Der Brahmane schwieg, und schwieg so
lange, daß im kleinen Fenster die Sterne
wanderten und ihre Figur veränderten,
ehe das Schweigen in der Kammer ein
Ende fand. Stumm und regungslos stand
mit gekreuzten Armen der Sohn, stumm
und regungslos saß auf der Matte der
Vater, und die Sterne zogen am Himmel.
Da sprach der Vater: “Nicht ziemt es dem
Brahmanen, heftige und zornige Worte zu
reden. Aber Unwille bewegt mein Herz.
Nicht möchte ich diese Bitte zum zweiten

Siddhartha entered the chamber,
where his father was sitting on a
mat of bast, and stepped behind his
father and remained standing there,

was standing behind him. Quoth the
Brahman: “Is that you, Siddhartha?
Then say what you came to say.”
Quoth Siddhartha: “With your
permission, my father. I came to
tell you that it is my longing to
leave your house tomorrow and go
to the ascetics. My desire is to
become a Samana. May my father
not oppose this.”
The Brahman fell silent, and
remained silent for so long that the
stars in the small window wandered
and changed their relative positions,
‘ere the silence was broken. Silent
and motionless stood the son with
his arms folded, silent and
motionless sat the father on the
mat, and the stars traced their
paths in the sky. Then spoke the
father: “Not proper it is for a

“Du wirst,” sprach er, “in den Wald gehen
und ein Samana sein. Hast du Seligkeit
gefunden im Walde, so komm und lehre
mich Seligkeit. Findest du Enttäuschung,
dann kehre wieder und laß uns wieder
gemeinsam den Göttern opfern. Nun gehe

“You will,” he spoke, “go into the
forest and be a Samana. When
you’ll have found blissfulness in the
forest, then come back and teach
me to be blissful. If you’ll find
disappointment, then return and let

Händler handeln, Fürsten zur Jagd gehen,
Leidtragende ihre Toten beweinen, Huren
sich anbieten, Ärzte sich um Kranke
mühen, Priester den Tag für die Aussaat
bestimmen, Liebende lieben, Mütter ihre
Kinder stillen—und alles war nicht den
Blick seines Auges wert, alles log, alles
stank, alles stank nach Lüge, alles
täuschte Sinn und Glück und Schönheit
vor, und alles war uneingestandene
Verwesung. Bitter schmeckte die Welt.
Qual war das Leben.
In the evening of this day they
caught up with the ascetics, the
skinny Samanas, and offered them
their companionship
and—obedience. They were
accepted.
Siddhartha gave his garments to a
poor Brahman in the street. He
wore nothing more than the
loincloth and the earth-coloured,
unsown cloak. He ate only once a
day, and never something cooked.
He fasted for fifteen days. He
fasted for twenty-eight days. The
flesh waned from his thighs and
cheeks. Feverish dreams flickered
from his enlarged eyes, long nails
grew slowly on his parched fingers
and a dry, shaggy beard grew on his
chin. His glance turned to icy when
he encountered women; his mouth
twitched with contempt, when he
walked through a city of nicely
dressed people. He saw merchants
trading, princes hunting, mourners
wailing for their dead, whores
offering themselves, physicians
trying to help the sick, priests
determining the most suitable day
for seeding, lovers loving, mothers
nursing their children—and all of this
was not worthy of one look from his
eye, it all lied, it all stank, it all
stank of lies, it all pretended to be
meaningful and joyful and beautiful,
and it all was just concealed
putrefaction. The world tasted
 bitter. Life was torture.

away from the Samanas! Whether
he has also other and better things
to give us, oh friend, let us await
with calm hearts.”

Novizen an.

durch den Hain.

Es ist an Meinungen nichts gelegen, sie
mögen schön oder häßlich, klug oder
töricht sein, jeder kann ihnen anhängen
oder sie verwerfen. Die Lehre aber, die
du von mir gehört hast, ist nicht eine
Meinung, und ihr Ziel ist nicht, die Welt
für Wißbegierige zu erklären. Ihr Ziel ist
ein anderes; ihr Ziel ist Erlösung vom
Leiden. Diese ist es, welche Gotama
lehrt, nichts anderes.”
“Mögest du mir, o Erhabener, nicht
had not been there before, and
which cannot be demonstrated and
cannot be proven: these are your
teachings of overcoming the world,
of salvation. But with this small
gap, with this small breach, the
entire eternal and uniform law of
the world is breaking apart again

perfected one, with his kind, with
his polite and clear voice: “You’ve
heard the teachings, oh son of a
Brahman, and good for you that
you’ve thought about it thus
deeply. You’ve found a gap in it, an
error. You should think about this
further. But be warned, oh seeker
of knowledge, of the thicket of
opinions and of arguing about
words. There is nothing to opinions,
they may be beautiful or ugly, smart
or foolish, everyone can support
them or discard them. But the
teachings, you’ve heard from me,
are no opinion, and their goal is not
to explain the world to those who
seek knowledge. They have a
different goal; their goal is salvation
from suffering. This is what Gotama
teaches, nothing else.”
“I wish that you, oh exalted one,

glance and smile, sit and walk this

Wege zu sich selbst. All dieses, all dies
Gelb und Blau, Fluß und Wald, ging zum
erstenmal durchs Auge in Siddhartha ein,
war nicht mehr Zauber Maras, war nicht
mehr der Schleier der Maya, war nicht
mehr sinnlose und zufällige Vielfalt der
Erscheinungswelt, verächtlich dem tief
denkenden Brahmanen, der die Vielfalt
verschmäht, der die Einheit sucht. Blau
war Blau, Fluß war Fluß, und wenn auch
im Blau und Fluß in Siddhartha das Eine
und Göttliche verborgen lebte, so war es
doch eben des Göttlichen Art und Sinn,
hier Gelb, hier Blau, dort Himmel, dort
Wald und hier Siddhartha zu sein. Sinn
und Wesen war nicht irgendwo hinter den
Dingen, sie waren in ihnen, in allem.

its midst was he, Siddhartha, the
awakening one, on the path to
himself. All of this, all this yellow
and blue, river and forest, entered
Siddhartha for the first time through
the eyes, was no longer a spell of
Mara, was no longer the veil of
Maya, was no longer a pointless and
coincidental diversity of mere
appearances, despicable to the
deeply thinking Brahman, who
scorns diversity, who seeks unity.
Blue was blue, river was river, and if
also in the blue and the river, in
Siddhartha, the singular and divine
lived hidden, so it was still that very
divinity’s way and purpose, to be
here yellow, here blue, there sky,
there forest, and here Siddhartha.
The purpose and the essential
properties were not somewhere

zuliebe, die Zeichen und Buchstaben
verachtet, ich nannte die Welt der
Erscheinungen Täuschung, nannte mein
Auge und meine Zunge zufällige und
wertlose Erscheinungen. Nein, dies ist
vorüber, ich bin erwacht, ich bin in der
Tat erwacht und heute erst geboren.”
Indem Siddhartha diesen Gedanken
dachte, blieb er abermals stehen,
plötzlich, als läge eine Schlange vor ihm
auf dem Weg.
Denn plötzlich war auch dies ihm klar
geworden: Er, der in der Tat wie ein
Erwachter oder Neugeborener war, er
mußte sein Leben neu und völlig von vorn
beginnen. Als er an diesem selben Morgen

and have not been born before this
very day.”

stopped once again, suddenly, as if
there was a snake lying in front of
him on the path.

he had to start his life anew and

nicht mehr, der ich war, ich bin nicht
mehr Asket, ich bin nicht mehr Priester,
ich bin nicht mehr Brahmane. Was denn
soll ich zu Hause und bei meinem Vater
tun? Studieren? Opfern? Die Versenkung
pflegen? Dies alles ist ja vorüber, dies
alles liegt nicht mehr an meinem Wege.”
Regungslos blieb Siddhartha stehen, und
einen Augenblick und Atemzug lang fror
sein Herz, er fühlte es in der Brust innen
frieren wie ein kleines Tier, einen Vogel
oder einen Hasen, als er sah, wie allein er
sei. Jahrelang war er heimatlos gewesen
und hatte es nicht gefühlt. Nun fühlte er
es. Immer noch, auch in der fernsten
Versenkung, war er seines Vaters Sohn
gewesen, war Brahmane gewesen, hohen
Standes, ein Geistiger. Jetzt war er nur
noch Siddhartha, der Erwachte, sonst
nichts mehr. Tief sog er den Atem ein,
und einen Augenblick fror er und
schauderte. Niemand war so allein wie
start again at the very beginning.
When he had left in this very
morning from the grove Jetavana,

years as an ascetic, would return to
his home and his father. But now,
only in this moment, when he

offerings? Practice meditation? But

Motionless, Siddhartha remained
standing there, and for the time of
one moment and breath, his heart
felt cold, he felt a cold in his chest,
as a small animal, a bird or a rabbit,
would when seeing how alone he
was. For many years, he had been
without home and had felt nothing.
Now, he felt it. Still, even in the
deepest meditation, he had been his
father’s son, had been a Brahman,
of a high caste, a cleric. Now, he
was nothing but Siddhartha, the
awoken one, nothing else was left.

Spiel der Sinne, so war es doch auch das
Denken nicht, nicht der Verstand, nicht
die erlernte Weisheit, nicht die erlernte
Kunst, Schlüsse zu ziehen und aus schon
Gedachtem neue Gedanken zu spinnen.
Nein, auch diese Gedankenwelt war noch
diesseits, und es führte zu keinem Ziele,
wenn man das zufällige Ich der Sinne
tötete, dafür aber das zufällige Ich der
Gedanken und Gelehrsamkeiten mästete.
Beide, die Gedanken wie die Sinne, waren
hübsche Dinge, hinter beiden lag der
letzte Sinn verborgen, beide galt es zu
hören, mit beiden zu spielen, beide weder
zu verachten noch zu überschätzen, aus
beiden die geheimen Stimmen des
Innersten zu erlauschen. Nach nichts
wollte er trachten, als wonach die Stimme
ihm zu trachten beföhle, bei nichts
verweilen, als wo die Stimme es riete.
Warum war Gotama einst, in der Stunde
der Stunden, unter dem Bo-Baume
niedergesessen, wo die Erleuchtung ihn
traf? Er hatte eine Stimme gehört, eine
Stimme im eigenen Herzen, die ihm
befahl, unter diesem Baume Rast zu
suchen, und er hatte nicht Kasteiung,

ultimate meaning was hidden behind
both of them, both had to be
listened to, both had to be played
with, both neither had to be scorned
nor overestimated, from both the
secret voices of the innermost truth

wird er dir viel anvertrauen.”
Siddhartha dankte ihr und lachte, und da

Kamaswami indignantly, “but in
fact, you are a merchant after all,
one ought to think! Or might you
have only travelled for your
amusement?”
“Surely,” Siddhartha laughed,
“surely I have travelled for my
amusement. For what else? I have
gotten to know people and places, I
have received kindness and trust, I
have found friendship. Look, my

dem du sehen wirst: Schaden bringt mir
dieser Siddhartha, dann sprich ein Wort,
und Siddhartha wird seiner Wege gehen.
Bis dahin aber laß uns einer mit dem
andern zufrieden sein.”

friend, and don’t harm yourself by
scolding! If the day will come, when
you will see: this Siddhartha is
harming me, then speak a word and
