Paralleling our society to the Givers society

Marlyn Zuno Mr. Medina Humanities k7 November 1, 2013

There are many examples of text from our media that parallel, The Giver. Some of these examples are articles about Edward Snowden, U.S incarceration rate, Arizonas ban on books and songs such as muse. There are more examples of texts were there is evidence of how they parallel, The Giver and Givers society. All of these texts have strong evidence of how the Giver society parallels our society today.

The Edward Snowden situation and articles parallel The Giver society. One way how they parallel is in secrets and lies. In the Edward Snowden articles affirms, The US government has been collecting Americans phone records. It also tells The US government ordered Verizon to hand over millions of Americans phone records to the NSA. In The Giver, the receiver of memory is only one that knows about the Givers society secrets. They keep as a secret colors; pain, family, feeling, war, snow and many other things and they lie about release. Another way is whistle blower because it also parallels The Giver. In the Edward Snowden article it is explained how Edward Snowden, 29, revealed details about the top-secret government programs. In the Givers society Jonas gives memories to Gabriel and he is planning on escaping from the community. And the last way is surveillance. In the Edward Snowden article it mentions The NSA looks at foreign conversations in an effort to help protect the country. In The Giver they watch and stalk the people so they dont break any rule. Overall that is how the Edward Snowden parallels The Giver.

The article about incarcerating the population of the US parallels the Giver. It confirms about incarcerating rate No country incarcerates a higher percentage than the

US and also confirms it by pointing out that The US tops every other nation. In the Giver they dont really have a prison but their whole community is their prison because they have no freedom. The Givers society is like a prison because they cant see colors, feel, choose career, have grandparents, have books and live with their grandparents so they basically incarcerate everyone because if they disobey they get released which is killing with out them knowing. The only ones who are not incarcerating in this community completely are the Giver and Jonas because they have the memories and know the truth but are stuck in this community. This article shows how when you violate a rule you go to prison were they dont have freedom and are controlled our society is also somehow controlled. I think this because in the article it clarifies that by At 716 per 100, 000 people, the USA tops every other country which means that if we all can be danger to the society we go to jail and there would be less people at the streets. So this all controlled because every time a person goes to prison they get money and they have less people to worry about. The Givers society is also controlled but more. This is because when they brake a rule the get punished or released. Also its controlled because prided from some freedom. Control is basically how this article parallels the Giver.

The Banned Books article also parallels the Givers society in many different ways; starting with how Arizona banned Mexican-American books. In this article it assures that The Mass-Tusd curriculum comprises some 50 books and All have been removed or confiscated from every classroom; teachers have been told to turn in the books that have not been confiscated This parallels the Giver society because its like if the books are a bad influence for students or contains secret information they dont

want us to know just like in the Giver . In the Giver the people cant read books they dont even know there are more books this is because if they do they will find out all the secrets and lies. All the books they have are books of rules and books about their training. And this books that they have do not contain information about animals, family, weather and other stuff because these are the Givers communitys secrets. In the article of books banned argues if books are banned or not banned by saying the issue of which if books are banned or not banned but confiscated, I think this is some how similar because they take these books from our major source of learning but not from everywhere. In The Giver they just take all books from everyone so their society is controlled. We start like these confiscating books, which could lead us to be more similar to the Giver. They also have been protesting for banding books. In the Giver the people cant protest or speak up because they dont know the truth. Even thought the Giver and Jonas do know the truth but they cant speak up or else they get released. Jonas does escape from the community in the community in this the way in how he is protesting. Basically that is Arizona banned books article parallels The Giver.

As the other texts the lyrics of the song uprising by Muse parallels, The Giver. The song uprising notes They will try to push drugs that keep us all dumbed down In the book everybody take pills. The pills people take is so they dont have stirrings which Is feel love. And that is how that quote from the song parallels the Giver. Muse sings on his song And endless red tape to keep the truth confined. This part of the lyrics of the song parallels the Giver. They parallel the Giver because the endless red tape could be the threat of them getting released if they say anything of the knowledge they

get from the memories. The last way of how this song parallels the Giver its when it tells Come let the revolution take its toll. This parallels the giver because Jonas wants to do something about what he knows but he escapes hoping to find the elsewhere. This how this song parallels the Giver but there is many more ways how this song parallels the book.

In conclusion all of these articles parallel The Giver. And there are many more articles in our media that also parallels the Giver. And overall if we continue banding books, incarcerating more people and spying on people is like staring our way to be a community like the Givers. So that is why is time to speak up now that we have the freedom because if we wait it may be late. Small things like the ones in the article can continue and become bigger things. Like one of my teachers says If we dont question our society, government we will never improve and become better. All of this learning through the book the Giver will help me make a difference now that I read it I have knowledge that I need to make a difference. This book all had an epiphany on me because it made realize how our community is similar to the Givers. And for all of this I want to thank my teacher Mr. Medina.
