In « · -.' .=,, ·_,= =·¸-,¸ --| ¸ . » you have mentioned about
v,|, the three varieties of khabar mentioned in the footnote, page
85 āyah no 24 of sūrah Yūsuf.

I understood

1) ` ¿ · = - . , ·,
2) · ¸- = = - =·- ···-- = _ = , ` =, « - . , ·

I didn't understand the third variety:

· ¸- = = - =·- ···-- = _ = , v ` =, « - . , ·

Can you please rephrase the example you gave by dropping and
without dropping the khabar and explain to me.

Dear Br Elyas

;:.|· ,´,·-¸

The example given in the Book is:

» | ., ,=|· · = · v , | _ · ¸ , ¸-| · | _ · ¬ |· - , , « .

'Had it not been for the fact that this doctor did not treat me, my
recovery would have been delayed.'

The meaning is that this doctor is no good. He did not treat me,
and so my recovery was not delayed. Had he treated me, my
recovery would have been delayed.

Now, if we drop the khabar _ · ¬ |·. - , ,. |, the meaning will be
reversed, because the meaning will be:

_ · ¸ , ¸-| · | ., ,=|· · = · v , | .

'Had it not been for this doctor, my recovery would have been
delayed.'

The omitted khabar will be assumed to be · ¬ |· - _ meaning:

., ,=|· · = · v , | - |· ¬ · _ _ · ¸ , ¸-| · | .

'Had it not been for this doctor treating me, my recovery would
have been delayed.'
Our Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahim, replies:

=· -=«-

So, where such ambiguity exists, the khabar should not be
omitted.

I hope this has helped you to understand the problem.

Wassalaam,
abdur rahim
