Nenad Belić remembers his father 15 march 1996

comments by Djurdjica (Djeka) Cvitanović, mother of Živan’s 2nd child 22 may 1996

Juxe (Žiks) - that is to say Živan, I always called him Juxe - was a teenager - he could never
grow up. Main problem: women; he managed to get away with it. His last engineer work
was in the 50’s, manager since then. As a student he made his armoir. He painted nicely,
watercolors.
During the war his sister Grozdana Belić - ”Zina”, or “teta Seka” went to partisans at the
start. His brother Radovan “Braco” was supposed to be a terrific kid. In 1941 he sabotaged
an ammunition depot; he was 18, was caught, tortured, killed. (In 1946 Živan always carried
with him a 9mm FM gun, in case that he found certain Jozo Rukavina who personally
tortured Radovan).

Zapravo je bio streljan u Maksimiru. Njih je pet-šest bilo streljano, nema mu groba. To

Mother Darinka, daughter of a highschool teacher, was moved to Bosnia - Sarajevo, Mostar,
Zagreb. Her family was from Hvar - her name was Jerković. At 15 she fell in love with Radoje
(in Sarajevo) who was about 20.

He was from Rab, a lawyer, studied in Vienna, very smart. Živan’s father’s side was maybe
from Bosnia, perhaps from Serbia. Likely from the east. One talked about some ancestor
who could cut a person in two with his sword.

Ma kakvi, srpsko prijeklo nije bilo moguće jer se Radovan rodio u katoličkoj obitelji. Bili

Parents forbid the relationship, but she got pregnant anyway and they got married. He left
for Vienna with money for furniture; he returned long time later without furniture, but with
a cello. Her parents banned him; they moved around, Živan was born in in Prijedor in 1918;
they lived in Subotica. Hause was filled with Gypsy musicians. Then they settled in Belgrade.
His nickname was “j’e sais tout”; he knew Gypsy culture etc.. His practice would go into a
slump; they would run out of money. He would earn more money, then she would buy the
carpets back, etc.

On je Radovan bio veliki bohem. Uvijek su najmili veliki stan, a u stanu nista nije bilo,

Živan was student in Belgrade in 1940. Živan, who was shy, found Nenad’s mother Katarina
“Kaja” Savić from obnoxious Serb family, mother’s side was Spasić.

otac joj je bio pop

She got pregnant at 19 - parents wanted abortion, but she would not have it because of
“hippie” ideology of Russian romantics. They would not let her marry, as Živan was nobody,
he was a Croatian, a catholic. She ran away from home. They got married, a civil marriage
in Zemun, only place in prewar Yugoslavia one could get a civil marriage. She lived with
Živan’s family for a while. Her mother was a bitch, finally she moved back, teta Seka took
care of Nenad after she left. Belgrade was bombed, soon they moved to Zagreb.

rodila mu troje djece. Nije se snalazila u boemskoj hrvatskoj obitelji.

It was tough as two kids were missing; when Zagreb could be bombed, family moved to Rab,
then moved back to Zagreb.
In 1943 Radoje disappeared, to join the partisans, not telling anybody; so police raids,
searches followed. Živan got friendly with Kvaternik, probably a very shrewd guy in NDH.
He wanted Živan to build the secret vertical takeoff and landing plane. No wings, but two
flywheels; built in Živan’s workshop. Kvaternik was dressed all in black with death skull. He
protected Živan by claiming that he worked on a secret project for the 3rd Reich.
Toward the end of war Živan connected with Djeka, she got pregnant, he went to Austria,
grandfather reappeared. Grandmother was raising Nenad.

On sam nikada nije bio komunist.

In 1946 Slobodan Penezić-Krcun and Seka reappeared in Belgrade, he as Serbia’s minister of

interior, Nenad and grandmother moved to Belgrade to live with Seka. In 1948 Živan reap-
peared and studied intensively 10 months and finished his degree in mechanical engineering
- Belgrade 1949.

He got a car in Austria, wore uniform, spoke German, was collecting reparations. He met
some Austrian with overturned car, bought the car for 1.000 cigarets.

komisiji u Austriji, i poslije u Italiji.

Then we moved to Rijeka with grandmother. Živan found Greta, absolutely gorgeous and
empty and strange; she knew nothing. Nenad was 15 and they had nothing to talk about.
Teta Seka had Vidica in 1946. Meco (Radovan Belić) was born in 1953 (?). His grandfather
was a riot, phone installer, totally bold, laid back. “Samo da znaš, dok nekom ne smrkne,
drugome ne sine” he told Živan at the wedding.

Nije bila glupa, no zaljubljena u njega. Greta je bila izrazito
ljepa blondina, vitka i visoka u mladosti. Nije htjela trpiti Živanove nevjere. Meco je bio
kršten jer ga je krstila njegova baka.

Nenad spent a year in US at 13; Živan was a director until 1966, then went to Prag.

How did he get to America? through Penezića. He sent them all to study abroad.

In 1958 he got a girlfriend; then she moved to Chile; Živan went to Chile on business, and
then they divorced, traded apartments for 2 smaller ones. Nenad and Živan started living
like two bachelors. They had two cars, but not a table in the house. Živan had a lots of
girlfriends. Azra stayed over, and for breakfast they had hot chocolate. He married Azra in
1962(?); they moved to Prag in 1964.

3
i elegantna.

Živan had girlfriends in Prag, he had a child (girl). Azra started having affairs with a man
she later married. In 1973 they came back and divorced.

Živan continued with girlfriends. He was approaching pension - he worked for some import-
export company. He got mixed up with Tončica; she got pregnant immediately (probably
snared him).

zbog mog zdravstvenog stanja.

Tončica comes across as a very laid back person. A dermatologist, comes from Otočac, Gacka,
her father has a trucking business.

Živan retired, became a housewife, every summer he spent 3 months in his boat, with girl-
friends in the boat.
He died at age 74: official story is that guys in Žirkovac noticed that his boat was drifting.
He had brain hemorrhage - he died six hours later. Likely story: he was with his girlfriend,
some Czech gym instructor. Girl panicked, brought the boat in, and disappeared.

pogrebu.

Krcun, from Užice, was very idealistic. Krcun had nice parents, mother was a gentle soul.

4

Seka was always Belić, never Penezić. She worked in propaganda. 1 2

djecom

He survived the Informbureau, his star rose, he was responsible for thousands of arrests.

Čovjek nemože biti idealist i strpiti tisuće ljudi u zatvor. On je bio Titoist. Uglavnom su
hrvate stavili u zatvor.

Very nice guy even though he was a chief of police. Nothing sleazy about him. Right after
the war he would listen to conversations in his barbershop and then would take care of it -
barber did not know who he was.

Very smart. He read a lot, was interested in everything, he looked like Kennedy.

Predrag: In Croatia in summer 1995 Sara did some detective work about the quality of my genetic stock.
First she looked at the pictures of the family of my maternal grandfather - their name is Golmajer. One of
the grand uncles looked intelligent, so no matter how much my mother tried to tell her that his uncle was
bishop Gollmayer of Ljubljana (then Leibach), another Gollmayer was important catholic canon in Istria, and
that name is from Corinthia (Steiern?). Sara remains unconvinced. This scepticism was aparently shared by
some Croatian Serbs who in 1945 plowed over my grandmother’s grave in Gospić, assuming that with name
like that no family will be coming back.
Djeka declared that she wished there was someone Jewish in the family, because Jews are intelligent, but
there is nothing to do - there are none in her family.
Then she scratched her head and remembered that I do have a Jewish grand-grand-grandmother called (of
all names) Sara, via Živan (my biological father). She was sephardic and by means that nobody remembers
she landed on Rab, a Croatian island in Adriatic and married a Croatian fisherman called Belić. Their son
begot two children, one of which was my biological father (and father of n other genetic copies), and the other,
Seka, married at the end of the war a man called Penezić-Krcun, head of Serbian police and one of the main
henchmen in executing some 30.000 - 300,000 Croats or any other potential opposition during the communist
takeover in 1945-46.
To my mother’s surprise Živan’s sister in 1945 suddenly changed her name to Weiss (beli means white in
slavic tongues) - the explanation was that Penezić family would never allow their son to marry a Croat, but
being Jew was OK. That’s how the mother learned that the Živan had a Jewish paternal grandmother.
Summa summarum, this makes me 1/4 by Arian laws - hence the gleam.
2
Predrag: I found one witness connecting Krcun to Bleiburg. However, Prof. Andrija Grgičević
(http://www.iridis.com/ndh/9712/9712050.htm) is not in doubt: “Pogrom Hrvata 1945. bio je spektaku-

He died in a car accident in 1964; for many years people would bring flowers to his grave.
