Comment Great teacher! Always provided great feedback and clear objectives for every assignment. Made the subject interesting and relatable. I could not have asked for a better teacher. Vanessa always provided ample time to complete assignments and she was always quick with email responses. She was willing to help outside of class and to set up additional meetings to assist us. At one point in the course I was frustrated with my peers. Vanessa made time to listen and she handled the entire situation professionally. She made sure to address my concerns without embarrassing me or causing a scene. Outside of class she was willing to read papers before we submitted them and provided feedback. She was a positive instructor and demonstrated respect to each student. Vanessa was a fair grader and always provided reasons for her decisions. She created a safe, and comfortable learning environment by expressing her ideas and motivating students to share their ideas even if they were in opposition to hers. Overall, Vanessa is a great instructor and I would be more than happy to have her teach another class for cohort 7. Very good instructor, helpful, friendly, and knowledgable. Very personable and accommodating. Vanessa can be a nice, supportive instructor at times, however she is very judgmental. Many times in class there were class discussions and debates. It is very obvious that if you do not agree with her point of view or opinion, that she immediately judges you. She will give a student the nastiest look for not agreeing. I have learned to not speak my mind and opinions because she has formed a classroom environment in which I do not feel comfortable to speak. As far as the academic side of teaching is concerned, she is a great professor. She explains her assignments very well and it is known what is expected of us academically. As far as grading goes, she does not grade to her rubric and is not a fair grader. She grades too easily and if a group or single person misses a major component of an assignment, that according to the rubric is worth 30 points, she will give them a high 90 as a grade. This has allowed the entire class to slack off on assignments because we all know she will still give us a high-A. She is a very poor grader. Very supportive! Vanessa can get very frustrated and annoyed with her students if we have questions sometimes. Instead of helping us, she gets annoyed and then assumes we didn't read the chapter, which is not true. She does care about us a lot which I can see and she wants us to succeed. This course was a lot of fun! I couldn't have chosen a better subject or instructor this semester for this 8:30am slot! Vanessa was very enthusiastic each week and provided us with many opportunities to expand our knowledge! I really liked having her teach the class. Vanessa offered us so many creative ideas to use within our classroom. She is always prepared and she is always available for us. Thank you Vanessa for an awesome semester. This was my favorite class this term! Vanessa is a great instructor who is always on time and is always prepared.. She is always willing to answer any questions that we may have and is also willing to listen to our concerns about the course and help us in anyway that she is able too. She is also very understanding of technical issues that may arise during the class as well. Vanessa is a good teacher with good insight but tends to take her personal attitudes out on students of which she doesn't like. This causes grades to drop and classes to get awkward. If you're on her good side, then class is good though. As a facilitator of the course, Vanessa Casciola's teaching standards seem a bit unethical at times. For the diverse portrayals paper assignment, certain specifics were not detailed in the course syllabus or rubric for the assignment. When a number of students did not fulfill the unknown, unspecified parts of the paper, Vanessa took off several points anyway for areas of the paper unsatisfied. When talking with Vanessa, she stated in a rude, condescending tone that though certain aspects of the paper were not included in the course syllabus or the assignment rubric, she stated it during class (though not everyone heard) and will not change anyone's grade. When one student emailed Vanessa for clarification of the assignment, she answered their question but did not make an announcement to let the entire class know.

Always had an attitude with students in the class. Got frustrated easily when people did not understand and when asked questions over and over for clarification. I think she grades assignments depending on whether or not she likes a student. My only real issue with Vanessa was her bias towards some of the topics covered in class. She was very solid in her beliefs and did not appear to compromise/accept someone's differing belief. It made me feel uncomfortable to answer opinionated questions out of concern of indignation.

Comment Great textbook Teaching children's literature was a great class for introducing students to the many different genres of text. This class is great because it forces people out of their comfort zone in regards to genre and helps them understand ways they can utilize it in their future classrooms. Really enjoyed this class, especially learning about different books and their application to the classroom. Very helpful for learning about books for the classroom and how to use them. I love this class This is a great course which allowed me to truly grasp the literature aspect of teaching. The way Vanessa explained and instructed the course is a great advantage to the understanding of the materials. Class is interesting, lots of busy work but busy and usable.
