WHAT'S GOING ON IN AND AROUND BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS

BOULWARE GETS WSSU NOD:

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A new era for WinstonSalem State University football will begin as Kienus P. Boulware has been named the new head coach of the Rams after serving as the Rams' defensive coordinator for the past four years. The ninth head coach in WSSU history, he will look to carry on the proud tradition that is Rams football. "This is a dream job, and I'm Boulware at a dream school," Boulware said. "I'm extremely happy that this day has come." "Though this is Boulware's first head coaching position, he brings a wealth of experience to the position and has been well-prepared to carry on the strong legacy of the WSSU football program," said Bill Hayes, WSSU athletic director. "A man with more than 17 years of collegiate coaching experience under his belt, Boulware is regarded by his peers as one of the top defensive coaches in NCAA Division II football. He has certainly spent his coaching career as talent developer, motivator and a professional with an unbridled passion for the game of football." Boulware arrived at WSSU after spending four years as an assistant coach at Shaw University in Raleigh. where his defensive teams ranked tops in the nation in 2007 and 2008, and brings with him a wealth of collegiate coaching experience and championship pedigree. Over the past four seasons, Boulware has transformed the WSSU defensive unit into the best in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the nation each year. His 2013 defensive unit was not only tops in the CIAA, but finished the season ranked as the top Division II defense in the nation. During the Rams run to national title game in 2012, his defense led the CIAA once again and finished 12th nationally. In 2011, his defense led the CIAA and finished ninth in Division II and his defensive unit finished ranked as the number one unit in the CIAA and fifth nationally in 2010. A native of Thomasville, N.C., Boulware starred in football and also was a two-time state champion wrestler at Thomasville High School. He would go on to play two seasons (1993-94) as an inside linebacker at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before his football career was shortened by the discovery of a spinal cord abnormality. He remained on the sideline as a student coach for two seasons under former coach Mack Brown, working with linebackers and defensive linemen. Upon graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in May of 1997 with a degree in organizational communication, Boulware coached linebackers at Livingstone College for two years (1997-98) and helped to lead the Blue Bears to a pair of CIAA Championships. Following his tenure at Livingstone he moved to North Carolina Central in Durham, where he served in various capacities including assistant football coach (linebackers and defensive line), assistant track coach and assistant athletic director.

CIAA Lincoln (5-2 CIAA, 1-0 N) won its first North Division game (vs. Bowie State, 71-50) Saturday to stretch its win streak to four games as it headed into a showdown for the division lead Wednesday (Jan. 22) at Elizabeth City State. Head coach John Hill's Lions will then host Virginia Union Saturday (Jan. 25) and Chowan Wednesday (Jan. 29). Shawn Walker's ECSU Vikings (53, 1-0) are at VSU Saturday and at VUU Wednesday. Fayetteville State, Winston-Salem State and Livingstone drew first blood in the West Division getting wins Saturday night. FSU (5-2, 1-0) had a TV game vs. Livingstone on Wed. (Jan. 22) before games at WSSU (5-2, 1-0) Saturday and hosting Shaw (4-3, 0-1) Wednesday. After its date Wednesday at FSU, Livingstone (4-3, 1-0) will hit the road Saturday at JCSU (3-4, 0-1) and hosts St. Augustine's (3-3, 0-1) Wednesday. WSSU (5-2, 1-0) was to face Shaw Wednesday (Jan. 22) before dates Saturday hosting Fayetteville State and Wednesday hosting J. C. Smith. For the women, Virginia State is off to a 14-1 start, 5-1 in the CIAA and is 1-0 in the East Division along with Lincoln and ECSU. FSU, Shaw and WSSU are 1-0 and early leaders in the West. MEAC Savannah State (5-0 MEAC), playing at home, swept the Florida schools (Bethune-Cookman, 70-60, and Florida A&M, 79-68) while Morgan State (4-0) pulled off a difficult sweep on the

road at the Virginia Tidewater schools (Norfolk State, 87-70 and Hampton, 80-71). Those results leave Horace Broadnax's SSU Tigers and Todd Bozeman's MSU Bears at the top of the MEAC pecking order. Morgan's win over Norfolk State Saturday ended a 23-game MEAC regular season win streak by the Spartans, who bounced back to down Coppin State Monday, 83-71. The jockeying continues this week as the teams at the top of the league do battle with each other. Savannah State hosts both Tidewater schools this week taking on Hampton (3-2) Saturday and Norfolk State (5-1) Monday. Morgan State meanwhile is on the road in North Carolina facing the Aggies of A&T (2-1) on Saturday and the Eagles of NC Central (2-1) on Monday. Coppin State (3-2) plays at NCCU Saturday and at A&T Monday. Norfolk State and Hampton play at S. C. State (2-2) Saturday and Monday respectively. Hampton (5-0) leads the women's race with five teams (SSU, CSU, Howard, NCCU and A&T) behind them with one loss. SIAC Fort Valley State (8-0) ran its current win streak to nine games with wins

over Paine (72-64) and Benedict (7463). The win over Benedict gives the Wildcats a two-game lead (in the loss column) over the Tigers (6-2) and Clark Atlanta (4-2) in the East Division. FVSU, under head coach Sammy Jackson, is the only team undefeated in SIAC play. The 'Cats are back in action Monday with a date at Claflin. Tuskegee (4-2) got wins over Kentucky State (82-72) and Lane (85-76) and has a two-game lead over Stillman (5-4) and KSU (4-4) in the West. Leon Douglas's Tigers have won four straight headed into Monday's date at Stillman. Claflin (6-1), Clark Atlanta (4-1) and Albany State (4-1) are tied atop the women's East Division race. Tuskegee (3-2) leads the West. SWAC Southern's men and women are both at 5-0, and lead their respective races. Roman Banks's Jaguars are hosting Alabama A&M (3-2) Saturday and welcome in second-place Alabama State (4-1) Monday. Alcorn State (4-2) host ASU Saturday and A&M Monday. Texas Southern, also at 4-2, hosts Miss. Valley State Saturday and Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday. The Lady Jags have some company at the top with Miss. Valley State at 4-0. MVSU plays at third-place TSU (4-1) Saturday.
