Transforming lives with the love of God in Jesus Christ

Page 3

This is a condensed version of Pastor Susan’s address at the annual meeting.
Second, we have a gospel mandate to grow – as Jesus said, we need to be fishers of men. We need to tell the good news of Jesus to people in our community so that we can continue to grow. We need to make a plan for this growth, including evangelism and marketing plans, and paying special attention to leadership structures. At average Sunday attendance of around 200, we are at a size where churches often plateau or decline. To grow to the next size church, we need to act like the next size church, including: • Creating leadership structures that can sustain a larger congregation. • Building quality in our programs, which are a big part of the reason people join larger churches. • Staffing for growth. • Continuing to improve our excellent newcomer welcoming and incorporation systems. • Devising ways to identify members’ gifts and talents and encourage them to exercise their gifts. • Finding strategies to create community by encouraging connections between members of the church. Our vestry, other leaders, and members this year will be undergoing a learning and planning process to figure out how to meet these challenges. It will be an exciting year at Nativity! In Christ, Susan

Follow me, said Jesus, and I will make you fishers of men. That’s what our work as a church is all about – how we follow Jesus, and how we share his grace with others, through evangelism and service. We’ve done a good job of those things at this church, I believe. You can see some of our facts and figures for the past year on page 7. We do have both challenges and opportunities ahead. I believe these fall into two broad categories. First, we are in good shape financially. To ensure that this continues, we need to create a plan for long-term financial sustainability, including three parts: • We need to create a plan to pay down our debt on our church building, which is now about $616,000. • We need to plan for future expansion of our sanctuary and building out the upstairs in our current building. • We need to develop stewardship among our younger members in particular, ensuring that we are not too heavily dependent on a few donors. Senior Warden Emeritus Mark Dobbins has agreed to chair a committee to create this long-term financial plan.

Birthday and Anniversary Prayers
Nativity will offer birthday and anniversary prayers on the first Sunday of every month at the 9:30 service. If you are having a birthday, anniversary, or other occasion for which you are thankful during the month of February, you will be invited to come forward during the announcements time so the church can pray for you.

Healing Prayers

If you or someone you know is in need of healing prayers for healing of body, mind, or spirit, please submit your prayer request to Nancy Byrnes at nancybyrnes@cox.net, or call her at 480-512-1929. Your request will be submitted to a ministry group committed to daily prayers for those in need. All prayer requests are kept confidential within the prayer group. Also, please notify Nancy Byrnes if you would like to commit to praying daily for those who request prayers.

Wayne’s World
toward union with the Divine and everything we are doing at Nativity contributes to make advances in that historic trek. Ordinations are very clear that, although they may signify the end of one thing (the reaching to grasp a particular place), they most impactfully point toward the beginning of something so much greater. Thank you for being in partnership with me as we go forward together. We in the church all manifest a particular facet of the Divine reality while at the same time our foibles remind us of how far we have to go. Let us celebrate both. Thank you again and again and again. Pax et Lux, Dr. Wayne

Thank you Nativity for making my Ordination Service such a fun and fulfilling experience. I am humbled by the outpouring of your time, your talents and your selves to make, not only the service itself come off, but for these last four years where you have nurtured me and fed me all along the way. You might not realize it but this 4-year mark for me at Nativity far exceeds the time I spent as a Baptist minister in southern Illinois (only 2 years and 2 months). We have called ourselves a mission congregation that has grown to a full-fledged and recognized church in the Diocese of Arizona, but let us never lose sight of who we are as pilgrims on a journey together. This journey is unfailingly

ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES
ABCDs of Faith
Wednesday Night's ABCDs of Our Faith continues with the great themes of Christianity through 19-Feb. The pitch-in Salad Supper and class begin at 6:30. Please let Dr. Wayne know if you want to start attending. Evening Prayer featuring prayers for healing begins at 6:00 pm in the Prayer Chapel. Looking forward toward Lent, our 5part Wednesday series will commence on 12-March with "D" is for Discipleship. As always, please let Dr. Wayne know that you are putting this Lenten Study in your calendar.

Power Bible Study
What stories about Jesus do you remember the most? The Gospel of Matthew records several stories about Jesus that other Gospel writers don't mention: today and next Sunday, February 9th, our topic is the Matthean Parables. Learn about Matthew’s unique perspective and what it means for us! Come join Pastor Susan and Dr. Wayne for Power Bible Study for Epiphanytide in the Music Room on Sunday mornings from 10:45 to 11:25.

Adult Confirmation Class
Are you an adult interested in being confirmed in the Episcopal Church? Confirmations are scheduled for Sunday, June 8 during the Presiding Bishop’s visit. There are two ways of preparing: ABCD Class: If you have been attending ABCD Class, this counts as confirmation preparation. Lent Adult Education: Our Lent Power Bible Study at 10:45 each Sunday will count as confirmation preparation. Please contact Pastor Susan at susansnook@thenativity.net or 480-308-9216 if you are interested in being confirmed.

A NOTE FROM OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR
The Adult Choir is seeking new members! If you enjoy making music in a group, being involved in a ministry that brings a lot of satisfaction and is always visible during our worship, consider joining us. We are a very energetic and fun group of people who meet to rehearse every Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. We have exciting plans for this season on Saturday, April 12th, we are going to perform a piece called "Olivet to Calvary", an extremely dramatic and beautiful version of Christ's Passion for soloists, woodwind quartet and choir. We are also going to learn a variety of anthems from different musical traditions: from classical to gospel. If you are interested in joining us, please come to any of our rehearsals on Wednesdays, or talk to me after the service. This month the Adult Choir is going to shine in some beautiful anthems: for the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple Sunday we will sing Kenneth Nichols' version of "Song of Simeon"; on the following Sundays you will

hear Gilbert Martin's "Lord, Lead Me, Lord" quoting the famous hymn by Samuel Wesley; and Maurice Durufle's "Ubi caritas". These are wonderful pieces of contemporary and classical Christian music that we are all excited to share with you. This month we are installing the humidity control system in our grand piano - a necessity in the Arizona climate, completely invisible from the outside. It is vital for the piano to stay in tune, and a perfect way to preserve our wonderful new instrument! Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 23rd at 4 p.m.! Two wonderful musicians: Levon Zarasian, who plays in the Phoenix Symphony violin section, and a pianist Peter Gharibian, both of Armenian origin, will perform music by Kreisler, Mozart, Beethoven, and Sarasate. Their new CD "Armenian Music Treasures" will be available to purchase after the concert. This is going to be a real treat, so don't forget to bring all your music loving friends! Here are some of the facts and figures Pastor Susan shared with the congregation at the annual meeting on Jan. 26. Nativity has some things to be truly proud of! • • • • Average Sunday attendance increased from 171 in 2012 to 208 in 2013, a 22% increase. Total pledges also increased by 22%. We had 15 baptisms and 7 confirmation/reception/reaffirmations. We increased our number of worship services each week from one to three. Music programs add greatly to our worship services, with beautiful music from classical to jazz/gospel. In addition, a number of fine concerts have allowed us to reach out to members of our community and invite them to experience what Nativity has to offer. Children’s and Youth Ministries: o 61 children from age 3 to grade 5 either registered for Sunday school or attended regularly without registering. o 21 students registered for junior and senior high youth group; 9 students went on our Mission Week 2013; 11 students are registered for Mission Trip 2014; 10 students are participating in teen confirmation class. Adult Education programs are growing, including Wednesday night ABCDs of Faith, ChurchNext online learning, Book Club, and Movie Night. Sunday morning Power Bible Study attendance has swelled to about 20-25. We offer a number of after-school and summer community education programs for children and youth, working with providers such as Desert Foothills Theater. We are also providing tutoring space for teachers and students at Pinnacle Peak Elementary. Outreach and Community Service: o We work with 18 different outreach programs in the Valley, in the United States, and internationally. o We sent mission trips to Navajoland and to Veracruz, Mexico. o We started an important new outreach project, Santa Maria Food Bank, in partnership with an Episcopal church on the west side of Phoenix. o We gave significant amounts of money away to organizations helping those in need, as well as to individuals in need of assistance. We supported Dr. Wayne Whitney through his ordination, first as a deacon, then as a priest, in a terrific inspiring ordination service just last month!

Have a Heart! A lovely way to commemorate . . .
The 2014 Flower Dedication Chart is now available for your consideration. Flowers may be dedicated in memory of a loved one, or in thanksgiving for blessings received. Once the last Sunday service is completed, the flowers can be taken home with you or given to someone as a gift. Please return the vases by the following Sunday. Should you have any questions, please contact Kathy Graf at 480-570-2276.
The month of February is Heart Health Month! We thought it would be a good idea to exercise our hearts and spread our love by doing a double outreach event on the Sunday closest to Valentine's Day. The Have A Heart event will include a soup and bread meal provided by Youth Group families. Participants will be encouraged to make a donation to the Youth Group Mission trip and to bring in non-perishable food that will be donated to Santa Maria Food Bank to help folks in Phoenix who don't have enough to eat! Please join us during education hour for various soups and yummy bread on February 16. We'll be teaching our children the value of outreach as we help others and have a heart healthy meal together.

February Ones and Twos
Ones and Twos is a social group of adults at Church of the Nativity, which meets about once a month. It is open to all members, visitors and guests. February Ones and Twos is scheduled for Friday, February 28th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the home of Bob Schoenbachler and Susan Burnham. Their house is located at 9253 E. Sands Dr., Scottsdale, AZ 85255. The house is in Pinnacle Peak Vistas III, which is off Pima just south of Pinnacle Peak Rd. Drive east on Los Gatos, right on Adobe and right on E. Sands. They are on the left, 5 houses from the corner. Please RSVP to Susan at susan4420@gmail.com. They need a rough estimate, so they have enough King Cake for everyone. It will be a Mardi Gras style party, so please try to wear purple, green and/or gold, which are the colors of Mardi Gras. Also, please bring your favorite libation. This might be your last chance to party before Lent.

February Big Fun Bible Movie Night is Friday the 21st at 7:00 p.m. We will be watching part 2 of "The Ten Commandments." Don't miss the electric searing finger of God etching the Law into the stone tablets or the disgust of Moses when he sees the fickle nature of the impatient and nascent community of faith. As always your hosts will be David Bolger and Dr. Wayne. Bring your own favorite libation and we will provide the popcorn.

Urgent - Our Soldiers Need Our Help
The mission for U.S. Troops in Afghanistan is ending next December. Because of the draw down of troops, the commissaries and REC centers are already shutting down. Soldiers used to receive 3 hot meals per day, now they are getting MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). These backup field food packets have become their staple diet. Even basics, like socks, are rationed to two pairs a month. Our soldiers are in desperate need for basic supplies —now more than ever. This has forced Packages from Home to change their holiday boxes. At Christmas time they used to send extras, like Christmas lights and ornaments, but now they have cut the fluff and only are sending what the soldiers need to survive. PfH has sent out an urgent request and we hope that Nativity members will answer the call. From this Sunday until Feb. 14th we will be collecting donations and specific items for immediate shipment to our soldiers overseas. Canned Chili, Spaghetti-O’s, Soup, Stew, etc 15-20 oz. Thank you to Ginny Myrick, Jen Goins, Kara Erickson and Kelly Alley for bringing the great kid friendly food for the children to eat while the Annual Meeting was taking place! We had a lovely time with all the kids while the adults took care of business! A reminder that although parents are usual volunteers to bring snack for the Sunday School, any parishioner who would like to sign up for a Sunday is welcome! Our focus is to get the children directly from church into the classrooms so that teachers have as much time possible with the children. Having a snack in the classroom inhibits a delayed start from children stopping at the hospitality table on their way to class! Additionally, we can then offer more healthy options to the children. 9:30 Children's Chapel is a church service specifically oriented for children ages 4 - 2nd grade. We follow
the structure of the adult service using words that children can understand and study the Gospel being used in the Adult service. Some times there are crafts or drama activities to reinforce the Gospel lesson and sometimes Ilona comes in to teach the children a new song to sing in Church! Children begin the service with their parents in the Sanctuary and after the invocation the celebrant calls the children up for a blessing. We meet at the front by the altar and one of the children will carry a cross for the rest to follow to our chapel area. At the Peace, the children rejoin their families for communion and the rest of the service.

10:35 Sunday School begins at the end of the 9:30 service and ends at 11:25
At the end of the 9:30 service, I follow the choir out of the sanctuary with a cross and children join me as we go to our Sunday School Classrooms. This is when our Christian Formation takes place! We have a snack and the children gather by age to learn about the Bible!

Primary Elementary Class
(4 years old through 2nd grade) is using the Sparks curriculum and Studying the Sparks Story Bible. There are lots of age appropriate activities including a fun sheet with stickers that the children can take home. This curriculum is chronological story based. The children are learning the stories of our faith and in what order they actually happened.

Upper Elementary Class
(3rd - 5th grade) is using Living The Good News curriculum which is lectionary based. These children are developing the skills to find and read verses on their own and begin to understand meanings and symbols in the stories they heard when they were younger.
