Epitaph to free thought

The Devil that it is,

This Free Thought—
It tries to assume many forms
To entice us.

But we the People

Are wise.

Once it came as Fire—

We extinguished it:
Then as Earth—
We buried it:
Then as Water—
We put poison
Between hydrogen and oxygen,
Never allowing it to be formed.

We the People
Are Wise, culture-wise.
Next, if it comes as Air,
To escape detection?

We’ll throttle the necks

That dare to breathe in!
