Senator Mike Green Introduces Bill to Build Veterans Skilled Nursing Facility in Beckley
West Virginia Senator Mike Green has introduced Senate Bill 523, which will designate funds for a skilled nursing facility for veterans to be constructed in Beckley. The money would come from the Veterans Facilities Support Fund and bonds provided by the West Virginia Hospital Finance Board. The bill proposes using the fund to design, construct, equip, and furnish an additional 120-bed veterans skilled nursing facility on more than 17 acres adjacent to the Jackie Withrow Hospital formerly known as Pinecrest Hospital. Senator Green and the co-sponsors of the bill believe the facility is needed because the one located in Clarksburg operates at full capacity, and frequently has a waiting list. With a veteran population that has now reached over 220,000 in West Virginia, there is an overwhelming need for additional nursing home beds in the state to accommodate veterans as they become unable to take care of themselves. “Per capita, West Virginia has sent more of its sons and daughters into battle over the past 13 years, so providing an additional nursing facility for those who have returned home is something we can do to say thank you," Green said. "We need to be there not just for the ceremonial return home, but to support them when the cheering fades and the everyday trials of life begin. Through this bill, our state steps up to the plate to care for our sons and daughters when they need it most, and is a tangible demonstration of our appreciation for their sacrifices.” ###
