MAKING SUSTAINABILITY THE NEXT METRIC

The Post 2015 Development Agenda 20 February 2014 |SLFI| Colombo, Sri Lanka

7thFebruary2014 DearSir/Madam,

DevelopingSustainableEnergyGoalsinSriLanka
As 2015 approaches the UN is aiming to layout the next set of Development Goals. Global debates are underway on what the framework and Goals for the next 15 years should look like. The discussions are revolving largely around three issues: poverty, inequality and the environment. More than any other time in the recent past, there is a greater effort to put in place a sustainable development pathway. In this discussion, energyisacknowledgedasakeyissue. In the post 2015 development agenda, it is highly likely that Sustainable Energy will be a goal. The proposed targets by the UNlead process aim to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, increase energy efficiency, improve access to energy, and increase the use of renewable energy. These targets have an impact on developing countries as it will also determine policies, aid, trade, technology, partnerships on economic growth and poverty reduction. While this discussion takes place at a global level, it provides a window of opportunity for us in Sri Lanka to discuss our own options for putting in place a sustainable energy pathway andseehow, onapragmaticlevel, thiscanbetranslatedintopractice.
