SOUL MATES
A soul mate is someone who has locks that fit our keys, and keys to fit our locks. When we feel safe enough to open the locks, our truest selves step out, and we can be completely and honestly who we are; we can be loved for who we are and not for who we’re pretending to be. Each unveils the best part of the other. No matter what else goes wrong around us, with that one person, we’re safe in our own paradise. Our soul mate is someone who shares our deepest longings, our sense of direction. When we’re two balloons, and together our direction is up, chances are we’ve found the right person. Our soul mate is one who makes life come to life.

HUMOR FOR HIM
Getting married is very much like going to a restaurant with friends. You order what you want, and then when you see what the other person has, you wish you had ordered that.

The young son says to his dad, “Is it true, Dad, that in some parts of the world a man doesn’t know his wife until he marries her?” The father replied, “Yes, that happens in every country, son.”

Then there was a man who said, “I never knew what real happiness was until I got married. But by then it was too late.”

HUMOR FOR HER
A lady inserted an ad in the classifieds: “Husband wanted.” Next day she received a hundred letters. They all said the same thing: “You can have mine.” At a cocktail party, one woman said to another, “I notice you are wearing your wedding ring on the wrong finger. Why is that?” The other women replied, “I married the wrong man.”

After a quarrel, a husband said to his wife, “You know, I was a fool when I married you.” She replied, “Yes, dear, but I was in love and didn’t notice.”

THE OYSTER
There once was an oyster, whose story I tell, Who found that some sand, had gotten into his shell. It was only a grain, but it gave him great pain, For oysters have feelings, although they are plain. Now, did he berate the harsh workings of fate, That had brought him to such a deplorable state? “No,” he said to himself. “Since I cannot remove it, I’ll lie in my shell, and think how to improve it.” The years rolled around, as the years always do, And he came to his ultimate destiny, too. Now the small grain of sand that had bothered him so, Was a beautiful pearl all richly aglow. This tale has a moral, for isn’t it grand, What an oyster can do with a morsel of sand? Think what could we do, if we’d only begin, With some of the things that get under our skin.

If couples would put half the effort into marriage that they put into courtship, they would be surprised how things would brighten up.

MARRIAGE TAKES PLACE IN THE HEART
The real act of marriage takes place in the heart, not in the ballroom or church or synagogue. It’s a choice you make – not just on your wedding day, but over and over again – and that choice is reflected in the way you treat your husband or wife.

THE SEASONS OF LIFE
Here is our take on the seasons of life. As you ponder these, keep in mind that sometimes you will experience them as a married couple, and sometimes as individuals. SPRING This is the season of joy, when new growth occurs. Your marriage starts in this season. Your children are born in this season. SUMMER Ah, those lazy, crazy days of summer. This season is made for relaxing, vacationing and renewing. This is when your marriage seems like it’s in cruise control with no concerns or worries. AUTUMN Summer can lull you into complacency. You may even begin to take your marriage for granted. But gradually, some of the things you’ve worked so hard to achieve start turning sour.

22

Anniversary Inspirations

Autumn is the season of disappointments and unfulfilled expectations. This is the time to take stock of your relationship. Make corrections when necessary and give thanks for the good things you have. WINTER Doubt, disasters, disease, and death characterize this season. Nobody willingly enters this time of life, but it will come at different times in your married life. You may be surprised when a brand new spring melts your coldest winter. But it will. Just like nature needs every season to continue its course and produce its bounty, you need to go through every season in order for your marriage to thrive.

LEARN THE ART OF BATTLE
All married couples should learn the art of battle as they should learn the art of making love. Good battle is objective and honest, never vicious or cruel. Good battle is healthy and constructive, and brings to a marriage the principle of equal partnership.

DARKNESS OR LIGHT

In those moments when you are apart from the one you love, you must decide whether you see darkness or light. LONELINESS is . . . the darkness and pain of being alone. SOLITUDE is . . . the light and glory of being alone.

THE PROPHET
Then Almitra spoke again and said, And what of Marriage, master? And he answered saying: You were born together, and together you shall be for evermore. You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days. Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God. But let there be spaces in your togetherness. And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone.

Even as the strings of the lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping. For only the hand of life can contain your hearts. And stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.

MARRIAGE JOKES
The bride, upon getting engaged, went to her mother and said, “I’ve found a man just like father!” Her mother replied, “So what do you want from me, sympathy?” If you want your spouse to listen and pay strict attention to every word you say, talk in your sleep. Just think . . . if it weren’t for marriage, men would go through life thinking they had no faults at all. You know the honeymoon is pretty much over when you start to go out with the boys on Wednesday nights, and so does she. Personally, I think one of the greatest things about marriage is that as both husband and father, I can say anything I want to around the house. Of course, no one pays any attention.

MORE MARRIAGE JOKES
My wife told me I should be more affectionate. So I got two girlfriends. How do most men define marriage? A very expensive way to get your laundry done for free. The most effective way to remember your wife’s birthday is to forget it once.

The First guy proudly says to his friend, “My wife’s an angel!” The Second guy answers, “You’re lucky, mine’s still alive.”

LOVE IS A FLOWER: THE ROSE
Some say love it is a river that drowns the tender reed. Some say love it is a razor that leads your soul to bleed. Some say love it is a hunger an endless aching need. I say love it is a flower and you its only seed. It’s the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance. It’s the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance. It’s the one who won’t be taken who cannot seem to give. And the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live.

THE MIRROR OF YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS
Only in relationship can you know yourself, not in abstraction and certainly not in isolation. The movement of behavior is the sure guide to yourself; it’s the mirror of your consciousness. This mirror will reveal its content, the images, the attachments, the fears, the loneliness, the joy and sorrow. Poverty lies in running away from this, either in its sublimations or its identities.

GIVING IS LIVING
The more you give, the more you get. The more you laugh, the less you fret. The more you do unselfishly, The more you live abundantly. The more of everything you share, The more you’ll always have to spare. The more you love, the more you find, That life is good and friends are kind. For only what we give away, Enriches us from day to day.

THE NEWBORN CHILD
Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born. So he asked God, “They tell me you are sending me to Earth tomorrow, but how can I live there, being so small and helpless?” And God answered, “I chose an angel for you. She will be waiting for you, and will take care of you.” “But here, in heaven, all I ever do is sing and smile and laugh. That’s enough for me to be happy.” God said, “Your angel will sing for you, and will smile for you, every day. You will feel your angel’s love and be happy.” And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me, if I don’t know the language that men speak?

52

God said, “Your angel will speak to you using the sweetest, most beautiful words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.” “And what I am going to do when I want to talk to you? God said, “Your angel will place your hands together, and will teach you how to pray.” “I have heard that on earth there are bad men. Who will protect me?” God said, “Your angel will defend you, even if it means risking her life.”

53

Anniversary Inspirations

“But I will be sad, because I will not see you any more.” God said, “Your angel will talk to you about me, and I will teach you the way for you to come back to me, though I will always be beside you.” At that moment there was much peace in heaven. Voices from earth could already be heard, and the child asked, softly, “God, if I am about to leave now, would you please tell me my angel’s name?” And God said, “You will call your angel . . . Mommy.”

THE UPS AND DOWNS OF MARRIAGE
A happy marriage perhaps represents the ideal of human relationship – a setting in which each partner, while acknowledging the need of the other feels free to be what he or she by nature is: a relationship in which instinct as well as intellect can find expression; in which giving and taking are equal; in which each accepts the other, and I confronts Thou.

TOGETHERNESS
Seek opportunities to be together, relaxing together, sharing your interests and ideas together, just being. Try not to depend too much on outer stimuli for entertainment (sometimes it’s true: the louder the noise, the hollower the drum). Be alone together whenever you can, simply to be yourselves.

AN AIR OF MYSTERY
For the whole of the first week of our marriage, my wife went to bed every night wearing a white glove on her left hand, and a dainty white sock on her left foot. I thought this was rather strange, but didn’t like to ask her about it until the second week I eventually plucked up courage. “Darling,” said my demure bride, “my mother said that if I wanted a long and happy marriage I should keep an air of mystery and never let you see me completely naked.”

MY LADY’S PRESENCE MAKES THE ROSES RED
My lady’s presence makes the roses red, Because to see her lips they blush for shame. The lily’s leaves, for envy, pale became, And her white hands in them this envy bred. The marigold the leaves abroad doth spread, Because the sun’s and her power is the same. The violet of purple color came. Dyed in the blood she made my heart to shed. In brief: all flowers from her their virtue take; From her sweet breath their sweet smells do proceed; The living heat which her eyebeams doth make Warmeth the ground and quickeneth the seed. The rain, wherewith she watereth the flowers, Falls from mine eyes, which she dissolves in showers.

THE RIVER OF LIFE
The course of human life is like that of a great river which, by the force of its own swiftness, takes quite new and unforeseen channels where before there was no current. Such varied currents and unpremeditated changes are part of God’s purpose for our lives. Life is not an artificial canal to be confined within prescribed channels. When once this is clearly seen in our own lives, then we shall not be able to be misled by any mere fabrications.

By profession I am a soldier and take pride in that fact. But I am prouder — infinitely prouder — to be a father. A soldier destroys in order to build; the father only builds, never destroys. The one has the potentiality of death; the other embodies creation and life. And while the hordes of death are mighty, the battalions of life are mightier still. It is my hope that my son, when I am gone, will remember me not from the battle field but in the home repeating with him our simple daily prayer, ‘’Our Father Who Art in Heaven.’’

THINK ABOUT THIS . . .
Before marriage, a man will go home and lie awake all night thinking about something you said; after marriage, he’ll go to sleep before you finish saying it. Let the wife make the husband glad to come home, and let him make her sorry to see him leave. After marriage, a woman’s sight becomes so keen that she can see right through her husband without looking at him, and a man’s so dull that he can look right through his wife without seeing her.

MARRIAGE FRIENDSHIPS
A marriage is a series of friendships. Love serves as its underlying theme. Friendships provide it with the new challenges around which the relationship further develops. Each type of friendship with ones partner comes into being, rises to a peak of enthusiasm, and then wanes away in our cedar chest of sentimental values. Every once in a while we go to the chest and draw out a friendship item to give us a shot in the arm. Then we put it away till another day.

Isn’t marriage, like life, unstimulating and unprofitable and somewhat empty when too well ordered and protected and guarded? Isn’t it finer, more splendid, more nourishing, when it is, like life itself, a mixture of the sordid and the magnificent; of mud and stars; of earth and flowers; of love and hate and laughter and tears and ugliness and beauty and hurt?
