READ

Puts the safety in robber mode. Reads run, curl-to-post. Read call always against; 2 backs in backfield TE + Flanker to a side (i.e. normal situation) There is no displaced #2 (i.e. the WLB can handle what he has to do) Read call means; CB is inside and ON TOP of #1 (has to handle the post). If #1 goes inside immediately, turn him loose and zone the outside quarter. Safety is run-first, then curlto-post (pushing the post from underneath).

ON TOP of #1 in Read you are man-conscious, aligned inside. When cushion breaks, zone-turn INSIDE to ball and snap to receiver. You want to defend the post from on top and inside. If #1 goes inside, turn him loose and zone the deep quarter. ON TOP of #2 if #2 goes to the flat, you expand to #1. If Curl develops (#1), you rob the curl. If #2 is vertical (clears the LBs), you have him man-to-man. If #2 goes inside, read the QB for work (if QB looks to #1 your side, you double #1) = FIND WORK. Buzz at snap, stay flatfooted, play run first, curl-to-post. Read run first Action your way, fit gap. Action away, fill backside A. Pass read, drop outside #2. If #2 expands to the flat, you carry the flat (and into a wheel if it develops). Fit playside gap, scrape backside on run. Pass read, drop to middle hole looking to rob the crosser. ON TOP of #1 in Read you are man-conscious, aligned inside. When cushion breaks, zone-turn INSIDE to ball and snap to receiver. You want to defend the post from on top and inside. If #1 goes inside, turn him loose and zone the deep quarter. Remain inside #1 backside If #3 goes vertical, you take him. If #3 goes out, look for #1 or #2 to come in at the next level. Look to pick up #3 if he gets behind/past the Mike (2nd level). Remain at 10 yds, buzz your feet, remain over the football (maintain backside run-support) You lock up with the single-back. If back flows strong, you can pass off to Mike and replace him in the low-hole. If back motions outside of #2, pass off to backside corner, and pickup the #2 receiver. You are the low-hole player. Work to #3. No one can cross your face (pick up crossers). You will pick up #3 if he remains on the first level.

You displace to cover down, expand with #2 and anticipate an out from #3. Buzz at snap, stay flat-footed, play run first, curl-topost. Man-to-Man on #1 receiver. Corner makes Gilligan call to backside safety and backside linebacker, this confirms the coverage and initiate their keys. Rob inside breaking route and carry backside #1 man-to-man.

CLUE
Tells the CB and Safety to play IN/OUT on #1 and #2. OLB handles #3. Our answer to wide splits (avoid walking OLB out of the box). This is essentially banjo coverage for corner & safety. In CLUE, we divide the formation in half and treat the formation as separate entities. This allows the CLUE side OLB to remain in the box.
