Kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line
Exercise B, Question 14

Question:
A particle P is moving on the x-axis with constant deceleration 4 m s 2. At time t = 0, P passes through the origin O with velocity 14 m s 1 in the positive direction. The point A lies on the axis and OA = 22.5 m. Find a the difference between the times when P passes through A, b the total distance travelled by P during the interval between these times.

Solution:
a

a s

= 4,u = 14,s = 22.5,t = ? =u t+

22.5 = 14t 2t2 2t2 14t + 22.5 = 0 4t2 t 28t + 45 = ( 2t 5 ) ( 2t 9 ) = 0 = 2.5,4.5

The difference between the times is ( 4.5 2.5 ) s = 2 s. b

Find the time when P reverses direction. a = 4,u = 14,v = 0,t = ? v =u+a t 0 = 14 4t t =

= 3.5

Find the displacement when t = 3.5.

s =u t+

at2

Between the times when t = 2.5 and t = 4.5 the particle moves 2 ( 24.5 22.5 ) m = 4 m.
