Police are investigating a series of blasts that were repofted in Stone town earlier today (24 February).

Two of the blasts were reported to have occurred in the Mkunazini market area, with a third one in a popular meeting place in the Forodhani area, close to the Port.

Initial reports suggest that the blasts were home-made improvised explosive devices (IED) that caused no casualties or damage to propefty or person.
The Commissioner of Police for Zanzibar, Mr Hamdani Omari Makame, convened a meeting with-armed forces and intelligence seruices immediately after the blast to start investigations. Forensic expefts from Dar-es-Salaam Police HQTs have been deployed to Tanzibar as of early evening. Commissioner Makame said: "security patrols are on maximum strength and a joint effort by all Tanzanian law enforcement agencies is undenryay to ensure that there are no recurrences - and the culprits are apprehended."

The investigation is ongoing and a further statement will be released as fufther developments occur.
