Rights and Responsibilities:

A History of Racism, Sexism, and Classism in Disney Films

Mackenzie Woodworth and KanDee Sims Junior Division Partner Website

Why we chose this topic: We were both fans of Disney and thought that analyzing his movies for racist, sexist, and classist issues would make a good topic. We chose this topic because we wanted to study something we know, we like, and that would overall challenge us. The discrimination issues were intriguing and we wanted know if these were just concepts or actually influential

propaganda of the times. How we conducted my research: We started using a database called Proquest which gave us an idea of what articles we were looking for. Unfortunately nothing on Proquest was helpful. We solidified a thesis statement to guide our research and then searched for papers and articles on discrimination issues in Disney films written by students from Universities. These documents provided further information that led us to other resources. We found documentary films on YouTube of Disneys life and the studio environment and ordered books from our school library. How we created and developed our exhibit: We chose a website because of time constraints in our schedules and when reviewing the research it seemed to best fit a website format. The website also gave us flexibility to apply both our techniques in developing information and implement our different writing styles. In developing our website we organized our research in a word document by categorizing our information under to-be website pages that we would later paste on to the website. How our project relates to the them? Our project relates to the theme because we discuss Disneys responsibilities in being aware of their influence on impressionable youth and their right to freedom of speech. The viewers have the responsibility to understand the Disney content and teach impressionable youth while viewers also have the right to speak up against issues that they feel are offensive or discriminatory towards them.
