The History of Football

By Blair

Who started football?!

! Football was started by the vikings. It all started by a purpose of overthrowing it because one of the english leaders of the vikings cut of his head. They started to kick the head around. The english thought this was really fun. They thought we dont get ght in be in battles every day so they cut out a bladder out of a cow, blew it up, and tied it off. The only problem was that sometimes the cow bladder might explode during the game, so they wrapped it around with some animal skins, and that was the rst football made out of pig skin.

! Lets go back in time. Way back in time, like when the vikings lived to learn the history of football.

Points
Football didnt get to the United States until the 19th century. Back then the points were field goal 5 points, safety 1 point, and touchdown 2 points. In 1897 the touchdown points were moved to 4, and later on 6 witch is what it is today.
Fun fact: Football is one of the most entertaining sports in America!

Here are some very famous football players. Some of the best of all.

The helmet
! The leather football helmet is more than a hundred years old! Now the helmet has a face mask and is strongly protecting your head. Back then there was almost two cunctations every three games! George Barclay made the rst football helmet out of strong leather in 1896. The next helmet made came in 1917. With the rst football helmet is was only made for the outside protection. This time it was made for both. In 1930 Vern McMillan made the face mask to attach to the leather helmet. It was one of the biggest jumps on the helmet ever! It was used for eyeball protection and face protection. In 1940 Riddell made the rst chin strap on the plastic helmet to help rest the chin. In 1976 the four point chin strap was made to help keep the helmet rmly in place.

! Back then you only had three downs, but you only had to run 5 yards for a rst down. These change in points changed the game of football. The touchdown changed by 4 points! This was a huge change in football, and one of the biggest jumps ever! Points are one of the most important part of the game of football. Thats the history of points.

Cleats !
Cleats help people all the time on the eld like when in thick grass, mud, or dirt. Way back in the sixth century Englands Henry the 4th ordered the rst pair of specialized cleats for the Great Wardrobe. That became the rst pair of cleats. The rst pair of cleats was used in the 19th century then upgraded to rubber cleats which were better in muddy games made by adidas and another pair made by puma. Now football cleats are much lighter, better protected, stronger, faster, and more reliable than ever. When the ideas nally started owing adidas made the lightest football cleat in 2011 getting the ideas owing.

Rules
Back then the rules were totally changed. Back then there was no forward pass and just a running back until later on in history when there was until later on in history when the forward pass was made to help the quarter back make better choices on was he does, and that changed almost the whole game of football!. But along came the forward pass and that changed almost everything in this game. The Notre Dame Army game no one used the forward pass until Notre Dame did when they creamed the Army 13-35. People started getting serious concussions so the refs made the rule that you have to hit lower than usual and that rule prevented tons of hurt players.

Conclusion

Football is a wonderful sport that everyone should play weather you are big or small, boy or a girl you should try it! Now you know what it was like to be in a football game back then. The history of football has changed allot. Thats the history of football.
