2/26/2014 10:04:00 AM Tolk hardly ever uses the term ‘evil’ Relationship between hobbits and elves and dwarves

Notions of good, evil and freedom Hobbits, men etc are called the free people of middle earth There is a constant threat that is beginning to loom over the shire Threes company: the secret will not reach… the enemy… that peril is now both before you.. upon ..side Look at ‘the enemy’- what so the character know about the enemy Frodo knows about the enemy via Gandalf Gandalf and gil. Have a notion that the enemy is something like the devil Characters who are evil cant actually create, they can only distort (cant actually make, he can only mock) Tends to avoid labeling certain groups as evil and good as it is dangerous to do so Corrupt characters: lest terror should keep you from your journey What does this reveal about the hobbit: In tolk’s world, he humans can be defined by their desire for power and fear of death Only humans enslave other free people For the hobbits the fear of death is not a defining quality Chap 3 : if I take your advice… danger that pursues me Black riders have lost their humanity, become distorted
