classification of Carbohydrates

Based on its size , consists of four classes of carbohydrates are monosaccharides , disaccharides , oligosaccharides and polysaccharides . Monosaccharides are simple sugars containing 3-10 carbon atoms ( C ) and has a free aldehyde or ketone group and a hydroxyl group . Monosaccharides such as glucose , fructose , galactose and confectionery smallest . When monosaccharides such as glucose and fructose given the Fehling reagent solution color will turn red brick and there are deposits . Generally , monosaccharides have molecular formula is a multiple of CH2O ( Campbell et al . , 2002) . Glucose is a six -carbon monosaccharide ( hexose ) were used as the basic source of energy for most cells of heterotrophic ( Stansfield et al . , 2003) . A disaccharide containing two monosaccharides are united by a bond O - glikosidat , the most common disaccharide is sucrose , maltose and lactose . Maltose consists of two glucose units are joined together, sucrose is the union of glucose and galactose ( Marks et al . , 2000) . O - glikosidat bond is a covalent bond formed between two monosaccharides by a dehydration reaction moekul ( Campbell et al . , 2002) . Sucrose is a disaccharide consisting of two monosaccharides , namely glucose and fructose . Lactose is a sugar found in milk uama , is a disaccharide consisting of glucose and galactose ( Stansfield et al . , 2003 ) . In contrast to glucose and fructose , sucrose showed no change in color to brick red precipitate if given the Fehling reagent . The difference was due to a monosaccharide containing reductive carbonyl group , whereas sucrose did not . Oligosaccharide chain is a composition comprising 3-10 monosaccharide units . Oligosaccharides have little biological functions and are usually just the result of hydrolysis of polysaccharides . Oligosaccharides found on glycoproteins and glycolipids carbohydrate components , and among the products of starch digestion ( Marks et al . , 2000) . Polysaccharides are macromolecules , polymers with a few hundred to a few thousand monosaccharides linked by a glycosidic bond . Polysaccharide material serves as a reserve or reserves if necessary when going hydrolyzed to provide sugar for the body's cells ( Campbell et al . , 2002) . The taste is not sweet polysaccharide , polysaccharide did not reduce Benedict's or Fehling's reaction . Polysaccharides serve as food , especially as an energy -forming foods .
