NEWS RELEASE
City Takes Over Balboa Park Centennial Planning
Mayor Faulconer, Council President Gloria Support a
Celebration Focused on Park Investment and Cultural Events
San Diego, CA Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Council President Todd Gloria released the
following statements today regarding the Balboa Park 2015 Centennial. The board of Balboa
Park Celebration, Inc. (BPCI) voted today earlier to transfer its event responsibilities to the City
after a lack of significant progress achieving its goals.
~I`d like to thank the members of Balboa Park Celebration, I nc. for the time and effort
they dedicated to this project. I know each and every one of them wanted nothing more
than to honor San Diego`s crown jewel in the best way possible,¨ said Mayor Faulconer. ~I
plan to work with Council President Todd Gloria, whose district includes Balboa Park, to
move forward with a more practical and realistic celebration that recognizes the character
and history of Balboa Park. This new celebration would focus on the existing cultural
institutions within the park.¨
Council President Gloria also offered support for bringing the 2015 Centennial planning back to
the City.
'I am grateIul Ior the work oI Balboa Park Celebration, Inc. The board`s move today
demonstrates its desire to do what is best for Balboa Park, and the City of San Diego will use
BPCI`s eIIorts as a base oI what may be possible to commemorate the 2015 centennial oI the
Panama-CaliIornia Exposition,¨ said Council President Todd Gloria. 'I look Iorward to working
with Mayor Faulconer, City staII, the Park`s cultural institutions, and private sector partners to
ensure Balboa Park serves our City and honors our history Ior another 100 years.¨
Mayor Faulconer and Council President Gloria expect to provide more details on the new
celebration plans in the coming weeks.
