Interesting Facts
Began in 1881 as the Detroit Normal Training School
The first class consisted of fifteen female high school graduates, called teacher cadets The program consisted of one year of instruction for future teachers

1918: first male students admitted 1920: became the Detroit Teachers College
Tuition: $15/year Expanded to a two year program

1923: programs expanded & became a 4-year degree-granting institution


The first degree was awarded in 1924

1933: renamed the College of Education


By 1945, it had developed doctoral programs

1934: Wayne State University formed


Combined the College of Education & other city colleges

1961: moved to 5425 Gullen Mall its present building


Designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki

2006: College of Education celebrated 125 years!

Learning Communities
Success Track Open to all Level 1 students enrolled in the College of Education, including freshman and transfers. TED 2250 Becoming an Urban Educator Participants will enroll in TED 2250 (Becoming an Urban Educator). Open to any student directly admitted to the College of Education. KHS (Kinesiology, Health & Sport Studies) Learning Community Open to any Level 1 student who is majoring in Exercise Science, Pedagogy, or Health Education. Designated courses are KIN 1991 and KIN 2010. Learning Community for Professional Preparation in Kinesiology This is a learning community for students who want to major in Physical Education. It is linked to KIN 4440, KIN 3550, KIN 4450, and KIN 4460. Pre-Morris Hood Open to any Level 1 College of Education student identified within an underrepresented population.
