Jan Semester, 2014

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE

TUTORIAL 1 1. Define Tissue engineering. Explain the requirements for building artificial tissue. 2. Explain the importance of scaffolds in tissue engineering. 3. Explain the importance of bioreactors in tissue engineering. 4. Describe the three main components used in tissue engineering strategies to achieve its goal. 5. Differentiate embryonic stem cells from adult stem cells. Discuss the ethical issues involve in the use of these stem cells. 6. Are natural scaffolds better than synthetic scaffolds? Discuss. 7. Briefly discuss with the aid of a diagram the evolution of a typical cell line in culture. 8. List some of the basic constituents of a medium. 9. Imagine a cell culture experiment has been set up for an adherent cell with Media X. After the culture has been set up for 3 hours, the cell density was determined to be 2.6 x 108 cells/ mL. If 3.5 mL of culture are withdrawn at that time, the aliquot is centrifuged to pellet the cells, and the pellet is then resuspended in 7 mL of Media X, calculate the new cell concentration? 10. Give two reasons for discouraging usage of antibiotics in a media.
