and RA, treatment of postsurgical and dental pain, acute pain including dysmenorrhea. For the regression and reduction in the number of adenomatous colorectal polyps as an adjunct to usual care. Drug Classification: Anti-inflammatory Mechanism of Action: May selectively inhibit cyclooxygenase-2, decreasing prostaglandin synthesis.Therapeutic Effect: Relieves pain and inflammation in joints and smooth muscle tissue. Dosage: (Adult) Osteoarthritis 200 mg/day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. RA 100-200 mg bid. Postsurgical/dental pain, acute flare up of osteoarthritis 200 mg once daily or bid, up to 400 mg/day. Acute pain eg dysmenorrhea 400 mg initially, plus 200 mg if needed on the first day. Subsequent doses: 200 mg bid prn. Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) 400 mg bid. Special Precaution: Compromised cardiac function and other conditions predisposing to fluid retention, history of ulcer disease or GI bleeding. Advanced kidney or liver disease. Pregnancy and lactation. Children <18 y/o. Elderly and debilitated patients.

Pregnancy Risk Category: C (X in 3rd trimester) Adverse Reaction: Abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea, back pain, peripheral edema, accidental injury, dizziness, headache, insomnia, pharyngitis, rhinitis, sinusitis, upper respiratory tract infection, rash. Contraindications: Asthma, urticaria or allergic type reactions after taking acetylsalicylic acid or NSAIDs and sulfonamides. Form: Capsules: 100 mg, 200mg, and 400 mg. Nursing Responsibilities:  Assess patient for appropriateness of therapy.  Obtain accurate list of patient’s allergies.  Assess patients for risk factors for GI bleeding.  Monitor patient for signs and symptoms of overt and occult bleeding.  Assess patient’s and family’s knowledge of drug therapy.  Start therapy at lowest recommended dose for patients less than 50 kg.  Rehydrate patient before therapy.  Celecoxib can cause fluid retention.
